I must be a big fatty because the "it's so bad for the dog" argument doesn't make a lot of sense to me when there's like 2 crumbs left on my plate. Sometimes I let the dog lick the 2 crumbs. I would NEVER do this in front of guests. The dog still weighs 28 pounds, can run like the wind and jump 6 feet in the air, and is extremely healthy.

We do it occasionally if it’s dog safe like plain egg or peanut butter. I put his bowls in the dishwasher occasionally and other times I hand wash (gasp) with my sponge.
I also throw my potty training kids pee and poop underwear into my regular laundry loads.
AND to make me even grosser….if you’ve had a frosted cake at my house there’s about a 25% chance my counter surfing jerk of a dog licked the corner of it. (Not proud of this lol).
The dishwasher gets very hot. I think calling it gross is a bit of an overreaction.

Oh I do crate my dog while I load the dishwasher because he likes to pop his head in and then he gets random liquid on his head and it’s annoying AF. I don’t actually care about his saliva on my dirty dishes though.
Absolutely gross, and now I’m going to be freaked out anytime I eat at someone’s house who has a dog, because I’m going to wonder if the dog has licked my plate. ::shudder::
My BIL & SIL let their dogs do this. The say the dogs are rinsing them. H might, if I didn’t pitch such a fit when I saw it at the ILs. He has done it ones or twice and I give him a huge side eye and sigh. So yeah, super gross.
We give our 3 cats canned food 2x daily and use regular ‘people’ bowls to feed them. They go in the dishwasher and it seems way grosser than dishes or cutting boards used for raw chicken or pork which also gets cleaned in the dishwasher. I mean that’s what the dishwasher is for, right?
ETA - now I’m worried that everyone who visits my house thinks I am gross and feel the need to buy an extra 12 bowls for the cats exclusive use. Even thought I know it’s irrational!
You probably want to get cat bowls, but primarily because cats need shallower bowls to avoid bumping their whiskers on the side of the bowl (called “whisker fatigue”).
We wash cat bowls in the dishwasher, but soak them long enough that they’re basically clean (just need to be sanitized).
I often think when I’m eating at a restaurant that I don’t like how other people have used the silverware and glasses before. So no, that’s a pass for me.
Also—what the hell do some of you feed your pets that you don’t even want their food in your sink? LOL
My kids have eaten dog food though (in the toddler stage crawling everywhere) and despite not being tasty it’s not harmful to humans.
I don’t let my dog lick my face though. I do find that gross and wasn’t a fan of my in laws dog doing it.
Our cat eats science diet KD. I don't like the texture of it, and I don't like the smell, but it's what he eats and has been helpful to his qol
I dont think its harmful if our stuff comingles, but I can clean his bowls in the laundry room, right where he eats, and its separate. He has his own set of scrubbers, soap, utensils etc and it's my preference to do it there.
I sometimes let my dogs lick plates, however I trust my dishwasher to actually clean my dishes. I however, don't do it in front of company, not because I feel "gross" doing it but because it is faster to wash them without the dogs being close.
Despite what many have said, my dogs do not beg for food overtly. They instead make sure they are in your view and looking away from you.
Also, while their water and food bowls get slimy, nothing else does. Its more repeated contact.

Oh, hard pass on this.
But I also have a thing in general about mouth germs in food. Like you know how much quicker leftovers go bad when you’ve been eating from them vs. when you haven’t? That bacteria multiples rapidly.

I don’t disagree. It’s never on purpose but he is a sneaky little fucker.
At DS2s 1st birthday I turned my back for 1 second and he was licking the smash cake. 😭 we just turned that side away from DS2. 😬
My cats are constantly on the counter and our all up in my space when I make anything. I am never bringing anything homemade anywhere lol. It's one thing for us to freak with it. I'm not sharing that with anyone else!
And yes I obviously try to make them get down. But cats..

Weird. I was just talking about this the other day. I was more than happy to let dog lick remnants. I'd scrape the food, but if there was a sauce residue, that was a-ok with me. I wouldn't do it in front of guests, though.

I was speaking about creating a bad habit, not necessarily an overweight dog. Our dog is only 7 months and I haaaaate going to homes where dogs bark or beg while people eat, so I just don’t want to create the habit of him thinking he’s going to get something from our plates every time someone eats. Not saying your dog does that, we are just trying to prevent it. We give him people stuff sometimes, like hard boiled egg yolks because I only like the whites, but just give it like a treat or in his own bowl. We have a lab, so he’s food motivated enough on his own lol.
tacocat i hear ya on the cat counter surfers. I’m constantly cleaning the countertops because of that. One will jump up onto the counter or table while we eat if we don’t secure him in the basement.

This thread has done nothing but made me realize how illogical and hypocritical I am about my dog 'rules.' Dogs licking plates humans eat off of? Gross. Putting the dog's kongs/bowls in the dishwasher? Fine. Dogs licking utensils humans use? Gross. But I have a spoon I use to fill said kongs (that's actually a different silverware pattern than our usual silverware, it's an odd piece that was left over from an old set), and I let my dog lick that when I've used it to 'clean it off' and then stick it in the dishwasher right next to the human utensils and think nothing of it. Just the way things our in our house lol.
We don’t but really only for training purposes. We have an Aussie who LOVES to try and lick the dishes in the dishwasher as we’re loading which he also thinks works for unloading clean ones, so i try to dissuade him regardless.
I’m breezy as long as they’re not in your face or begging/being obnoxious.
Barking is what I’m high maintenance about, lol. But I mean, dogs and kids are all gross. Stock up on hand soap and go about your day 🤷🏻♀️

I know it isn't true but I find my cats way less gross than my dog!! They don't go outside and eat goose poop. I really wouldn't be bothered by feeding them out of bowls in our human bowl rotation. Again, I realize this makes no actual sense but it's just my weird rationale. I use disposable paper bowls for the cats but realize I probably should reconsider something more eco-friendly. I just hate the wet food bowls/morsels being in my sink blech.
Cats don't really lick things the same way dogs do, so I am with you.
When I had dogs they would occasionally eat off of a human plate but it was something like birthday cake or if I cooked up chicken and rice after an upset tummy. They were not allowed people food much because if they got it they would be really annoying about begging. I mean it wasn't strictly forbidden but just not a regular part of the routine. I do think the licking the dishes thing is kind of gross, but agree with whoever said it's different when it's your own.

Except you can’t put hand soap in your mouth lol
But thanks for playing!
Lol well sure. So I guess stock up on dish soap as well? My gosh.
