I have a 14 yo and work at an alternative high school. I feel anything retro is in. If you would have worn it in 80s or 90s it is in. cartoon, grunge bands, nintendo etc t shirts.
Ds1 is 15/starting 10th grade. He refuses to use a wallet and just carries money and his subway pass loose in his pocket (I don’t recommend!). We live in Boston and it’s still all athleisure clothes, Vans and Nike brand for a lot of stuff. Nike Air Force One and Dunks for shoes. All the kids seem to have air pods - they aren’t wearing Beats as much.
I also in no way claim my kid is cool lol. The hierarchy of “cool” seems very different than my high school years
Ditto this. My son is a sophomore and I keep a close eye on what kids his age wear (my son also has disabilities and like you, I didn't want to give people one more thing to tease him about). This pretty much nails what boys wear in my area. There's lots of slides with athletic socks (WTF?) and Champion hoodies. Tapered sweatpants with pockets for when it gets cooler. DS wears his football hoodie and t-shirts a lot.We got him air pods a while ago which he uses constantly and I think help his coolness factor more than any article of clothing, to be honest. Nobody uses a wallet, DS just uses those pockets that attach to the back of your cell phone case. Gatorade bottles are popular here with the boys, which great since they're cheap.
Boys here really don't seem to care what others wear and the girls are just worried about themselves or the other girls. Some of the "coolest" boys in DS's high school wear the most random things and have their own style (I'm there almost every day picking him up from practice, and we're in a small town so I have gotten to generally know who is who). Unless kids are wearing things to school that are totally outside the norm (ie. pajama onesies with kittens on them) no one seems to pay much attention. I think kids are more generally more accepting of clothes these days, at least in our area. For boys, anyway.
Most boys here wear their hair long. Muppets on their head is a good description!
ETA: it also depends on who he wants to be "cool" for. My son is athletic and very into sports, so I wanted him to fit in with the kids he'd be spending most of his time with. If your son is into other things, those peer groups (and therefore him) may have other preferences.
My SS is 13 and an 8th grader. But he really doesn’t care about what is cool or fashion. We try to encourage that - how wonderful it is to just be yourself and not care what others are doing- but also try to buy him stuff that won’t get him picked on.
He wears exclusively athletic-leisure wear. He also has sensory issues and hates anything tight or with a button. So he wears, basketball like shorts in the summer, joggers/sweats in the winter. Graphic tees year round with a hoodie in the winter. I stick to neutrals for the bottoms (dark blue, grey, black) because he also doesn’t know when things match or clash.
I’ve been adding in band tees this year- he loves the Beatles, Sublime, Chili Peppers. Anything 90s also seems to be cool. His fav shows and backpack are Champion.
My kid doesn't typically carry a wallet to school but he has a simple black leather wallet for when he does need it. As far as water bottles go, the classic green Gatorade bottles are his favorite and I see a lot of other kids carrying them.
Shoes are vary a lot. I have one kid that will only wear Adidas and the other will only wear Nike. Air Force 1s are definitely popular, Air Jordans are really coveted, and weirdly crocs are popular with the kids too.
About the wallet specifically, I think I'm going to go with a new phone case with a pocket. That's a good idea.
What kind of air pods are good? Does it matter? It looks like the gen 2 are cheaper, and then the gen 3 and pro are the same price.
the major difference is the pros have the squishy earbuds as opposed to the hard ones (I assume there are other, techy/sound differences but I don’t know them). For me it makes a big difference because the older ones hurt my ears but I feel like it’s a non issue for a lot of people

I teach high school.
Boys (and girls) mostly look like they are going to the gym straight from school. Dry-fit everything, hoodies and hats. Major brands for sneakers... white nikes are still very common.
For water bottles, those squirt gatorade bottles are very common.

My son uses his phone case as his wallet. I don’t think the generation of air pods matter, but my son hates ear buds. He likes the over the ear Beats headphones.

DS is a Junior and started carrying a wallet once he got his permit - it's just a plain leather one I got from Nordstrom Rack. It's usually stuffed in his backpack.
He wears black converse. other friends of his wear Vans - none of them are into the Air Jordan basketball shoes - but I've heard they're "in".
He wears graphic tshirts. and open button downs - think "that 70s show".... his jeans are a light wash straight leg. Cargo pants are in cargo shorts are not. - think parachute pants from the late 80s/early 90s - in that perforance fabric as well as kakhi type fabric he also wears drawstring cotton/twill shorts just past mid-thigh. we shopped at JCrew, H&M, Vans, Aerestople (sp?), for most of his back to school looks.

I bought DS the pros. I didn’t want to spend that much initially, but decided to go ahead as I liked how they are adjustable as far as the fit goes. I also like the noise canceling option, especially when mowing the grass. He’s a super responsible kid too, so I know he will take care not to lose them or anything.

My son has a really uncool wallet (I believe my dad bought it for him) but he doesn't take it to school. Honestly it's probably so uncool it's cool at this point, if that makes sense. At our HS it's athletic wear all day everyday--Nike, UA, etc. You're an amazing mom. <3
None of the teen boys here carry a wallet. They all use the phone case sticky thing. DS has a greenlight card, which I highly recommend - no need to carry much else!

My son is 13 going on 30 and his current uniform is a surf brand t shirt or Nike with Nike shorts and longer Ethika underwear so you can see the crazy patterns. He also loves the vans checkerboard socks with his black slide on vans. For colder days he will wear dickie pants with the same type of t shirts with a hoodie. It is a major no no apparently to mix you athleisure wear so you can't wear Nike joggers with an adidas shirt. He wore a lot of joggers last year so I had to make sure he had t shirts to match the same brand as his joggers.

This is cracking me up because I would have thought it was not cool to look like one big matching track suit. Shows what I know. Also we're screwed because no way can we achieve that lolol. He's so skinny that I've found one type of addidas track pants that fit him, which we have in multiple colors.
My 10th grader's HS is very laid back when it comes to trends and kids kind of look down on even aspiring to "coolness"- I guess we are pretty lucky in that regard. He lives in plain gray/black tees and athletic shorts, various black sneakers, doesn't have or need a wallet (he has access to pay for things with his phone and always has a scrunched handful of backpack cash), and hates anything in his ear- so no help there. He likes his 32oz Takeya water bottles (plain!) because they never leak and he carries them in his backpack with his personal laptop (leaking is definitely NOT cool).
He's a science/math/tech kid, too- his first three classes of the day are AP Physics, IB Computer Science, and AP Calc, back to back with the same teacher (he also has IB Chem later in the day, LOL). He really enjoyed AP Computer Science A last year and I'm sure he'd recommend it if it's an option at your son's school.
FWIW, he started last year off after a year of virtual school knowing absolutely no one at his massive HS. He made some great friends in that year, people who share his interests and drive. I hope your son finds his people quickly, too. <3
My son is in 9th this year and looks to be pretty much the same as every other boy in school, a mop of hair on his head, Nike or Crocs for shoes, and clothes are all athletic wear, so Nike, Champion, UA, Adidas, etc and everything is black, grey, or white with a very occasional pop of color. He carries a plain black leather wallet. He carries a Jansport backpack, and most kids carry the same or a Nike, UA, etc one. He prefers just a solid color water bottle, but had never had a preference on brand for that.
