What’s interesting (to me) is that “getting lost” used to be a common experience - if not universal. Now it’s rare.
My eight year old managed to walk themself home from school - leaving the back entrance and up and over a hillside - without telling anyone. So it still happens. Blarg.
Did Kevin not have a landline in his house back then?
Whenever something like this happens on modern TV/ movies they lose cell phone reception somehow.
But yeah in modern times, Kevin would have an iPhone and his parents would track him via GPS. They would know all their neighbors because they are on FB/ Nextdoor/ Instagram with them. Due to inflation, not everyone is gone on Christmas vacation, and a neighbor would grab him in about 30 minutes and bring him to their house where they would care for him until the family gets home. But the family gets Covid and is stuck in France for 10 days. Then they have multiple airline delays due to staffing problems at the airlines, but finally make it home 2 weeks later. Grandparents would pick him up from the neighbors unless they are out of state snowbirds. They definitely venmo the neighbors $$ for their troubles and food.
The robbers would be caught after the first house due to the Ring camera (hopefully).

DS also walked home from school. That was the plan but he was supposed to go with the neighbor and couldn't find him, so the neighbors freaked and was looking for him.
