We are having our 2nd heat day today where the school closes for 1/2 day because too many rooms are over 85. It is so hot, but I’m really struggling with how this is at all equitable. There are like 50 out of 200 schools in our district with no AC. Last year we closed early a few days too- kids at these 40 schools are somehow just allowed to have less schooling than their peers who just happen to have newer schools?
So only the affected schools close? When I was in middle/high school we always wished for a hot day because the elementary schools weren't all air conditioned and if they had to be released early, everyone in the county was.
They only close the schools when a certain percentage of the rooms are over 85 degrees. So there are some schools with no ac that have some classrooms over 85, but not whatever the threshold is so they stay in school.
Our local elementary, middle, and high school all don’t have AC, which seems less than ideal as all that missed school adds up.
OMFG the person who is supposed to be going on this trip from Dallas (we're meeting our friend who lives in CO), her daughted tested positive for Covid this morning. And she has a sore throat and stuffy nose, but tested negative so far. I'll go either way, the rental is non-refundable now and I still want to get out of this damn heat. She's going to test again tonight, but we have spa appointments (that was HER thing she wanted to do) scheduled for 3pm tomorrow and me and other friend don't want to go to those if she's not coming so I don't know what to do because I assume they have a 24 hour cancellation policy.
Tell them a person in your party tested positive for Covid. They should be able to cancel without fee for you.
I will admit. There is no way I would travel with her. Kids are not good at keeping germs to themselves.

Yeah, she texted again that she won't go because she doesn't want to get anyone else sick and she already feels worse in the last 30 minutes. I was able to cancel the spa appointments. It just sucks. I'm still excited to see my other friend, but it's just different and I know Covid friend really, really needed a vacation and the three of us are so close.
I had to pull a complete Karen move because a staff member of the neighborhood charter school ran my kid's bus flashing stop arm. She pulled into the parking lot of the charter and parked, so that's what I'm assuming she was. I emailed the principal with the details. Fuck. Why are people so selfish? It takes literally 2 min to get all the kids loaded and everyone on their way.
ETA: The principal already got back to me and said she'll try to figure out who it was. Mentioned it might have been a parent doing late drop off.

Oh I'm totally with on going full Karen. People who do this enrage me.

I have a school bus question. If one is just behind a bus in a different lane and the yellow flashers come on notifying of an upcoming stop does one have to immediately stop or can they keep going until the bus has officially come to a stop and has its actual red flashers on?

Our State Fair started today and I think it's the first time in 20 years (excluding 2020) that I haven't gone at the crack of dawn on opening day. I'm trying to convince DH to go after work tonight. We're for sure going sometime next week though, so I won't miss it completely, but I'm having some FOMO this morning!

Are you saying that only the schools without AC have the half day and other schools have full day? If so, yes, that is inequitable and I would be upset too.
Yesterday the heat index was over 100* and almost 100% humidity, but our superintendent claimed in his email last evening that classrooms were not "dangerously hot" that day. Most of the schools in our district do not have AC (my kids' school being one of the schools without AC). The kids were so exhausted when they got home from school yesterday. There were other districts in our area that had half days or even a few with no school due to the heat and humidity. A few years ago, we had similarly hot and humid days, and a different superintendent at the time, and the district had half days. This super was new last year, and with some other changes and decisions he's made, I'm just not very impressed so far.

Law says you can proceed at a slower speed until the arm pops out. Personally I start coming to a stop in case a kid runs out early.

Same. Anyone can and should understand why it is crucial to stop for school buses when the red lights and/or flashing arm stop sign are on. Especially parents and school staff should be top of the list for stopping for school buses.

It makes me so ragey when people run through when the bus stop lights are on. I get annoyed when people don’t slow down and preceed with caution when the yellow flashing lights are on.
We had an intense storm come through last night. I have never seen lightening like this before it was constant like someone flicking a light switch on and off really fast. There was also a constant rumble of thunder for an hour. It was insane. I was up from 2-4 between the noise, my dog and two of my of kids. H & 1 slept right through it.
My parents want to buy us a boat. And I don't want a boat. While it's a very nice gesture, I just don't want to deal with the hassle/upkeep/cost of being boat owners.
For context- we have a cottage on a lake about 2.5 from home that we own with my BIL and SIL. We swap weeks all summer, so at most we are there every other weekend. This year we only ended up going 3 times (leaving today for our 3rd trip). I just don't think it's worth owning a boat if we'll only use it maybe 5-6 times a season.
I agree with you. Our friend has a boat and he lets us use it whenever he’s OOT on vacation (which is several weeks out of the year).
Even the small amount of upkeep we do, which he didn’t even ask for but I don’t want to have our friend think we don’t appreciate his kindness, is a detractor.
The kids loved it for the first few trips, now they’re like—-“eh. I’m good” I definitely love and appreciate our friend’s generosity but it’s made me realize I’m 100% not a boat person and neither is anyone else in my family.
We had a boat growing up and my dad always said his happiest day as a boat owner was the day he sold it. So why on earth does he think we want a boat?
He called H and said he needed his help moving something and asked him to meet him at a house a couple towns over. H said he was being weird and wouldn't tell him what it was about. I thought maybe he was buying something for my mom and didn't want me to know? (he's always buying random shit off FB marketplace). H got there and saw a boat in the driveway and thought my dad bought a boat and he was like "no, surprise, we want to buy you guys a boat to use at the cottage!" H was shocked and didn't know what to say.
Also, H's stepdad (who we purchased the cottage from) offered for us to buy their boat last year for a really good price (I think they said they'd let us have it for $5000 and they ended up selling it for over $10K) and we didn't want it. Ugh. H's is now thinking he might want a (free!) boat and I'm going to really have to convince him otherwise.
Roswell called yesterday. The mass is NOT malignant!! I am so relieved but my mind hates me so I tossed and turned all night thinking I misheard her or didn’t understand what she told me. The GI team will be in touch within the week to go over the plan for surgery.
My birthday is Wednesday and the weather is supposed to be chilly and crappy. Wednesdays are the only day (aside from Sunday) that DD2 has off from cheer practice/games, and I really wanted to go to six flags, but not in that weather.

I checked in to my southwest flight for tomorrow like I was buying Taylor Swift concert tickets and still got position B30 wtf.
I haven't masked on a flight in awhile, but I think I'm going to this weekend which is just depressing in general to think about the direction we may be heading for the fall/winter.
So many people either have priority status or pay for the Early Bird check in that it's nearly impossible to get a low B number doing the regular check in now. It's so annoying. I used to have no problem getting a late A boarding just doing regular check in. (pre pandemic times)
My mom and I went to FL earlier this year and I added early bird (since I get 4 free per year with my card) and we got like B 10 & 11. Then a few weeks later we did a family trip and my brother has priority boarding, so he bought all the tickets with his account and it was so nice to not worry about it and get A boarding.

So glad you got good news! I hope your surgery goes smooth! And happy early birthday! I feel you on this weather. I don't want to complain, since so much of the country is having unbearable heat, but I'm not ready for fall yet.

I could purchase A1-A15 for $30. Girl math tells me I should because I'm now saving $170+tip from my cancelled spa appointment LOL but it feels like a waste when it's just me and all I want is an aisle seat and overhead space. That should be possible mid-late B's right? Maybe?
I am trying to apply for the SAVE repayment plan for Federal Student loans and I just want to scream. I couldn't get past the first step of verifying my information because it won't recognize my postal code even though the error message explicitly says "Numbers, letters, and spaces are valid characters for Postal Codes."
I was finally able to chat with a real person and their only suggestion was "try a different browser". I was using Chrome, but I tried Safari and Firefox. All gave the same error message. Then their suggestion was "clear your history and try again". Okay. Except now I can't even login to my account on any browser on my laptop or phone.
I realize the person answering the chat is barely trained and probably paid minimum wage, but surely we can do better than "try a different browser". I asked if there was anyone else I can chat with and they have just evaded answering me.

yes, I think you'll be okay to find a spot towards the back of the plane. As long as there are not a ton of family boarding in-between the A and B group.
sweetchix, what a relief! That's wonderful news. I hope everything from here out is smooth sailing for getting that taken care of!
We are leaving after work today to meet up with friends in the Poconos. They are coming from Michigan and due to distance we only see them once a year (if we're lucky) so I am excited. My friend and I aren't in touch nearly as much these days, but we've been "bffs" since 2006 so it will be nice to reconnect in person again. The weather looks iffy, but also on the chilly side so I'm excited for that after so much heat this summer. Unfortunately we have a reservation to go tubing tomorrow so I am trying to cancel that. I should have known I'd regret booking something with a company with little web presence - I booked it two weeks ago and never got a confirmation email, except from Paypal. I called last week and asked them to send it to me, and I still didn't get it. Today I called to cancel and left a voicemail. I have no idea if they even have a cancellation policy since it's not on their website and I never got anything via email! So hopefully we get a refund. I guess if I never hear back from them I can dispute with Paypal. It was only $25 a person so not a huge amount of money BUT I'd rather have that extra to spend on food or whatever if we aren't going.

sweetchix, so glad you got some good news. Happy early birthday.
I agree about not being ready for fall. Sorry to be a broken record when everyone else is having record heat, but it feels like we've had no summer, and now it will just be cold and rainy, and probably humid. whomp whomp
I listed to "Exile in Guyville" today, so thank you GBCN for that, lol.
Finally, my cell phone service is garbage. I'm in a relatively decent area for service, and still use my phone for actual phone calls, so it's becoming an issue. Our phones are 4G, so I think our provider is just phasing that out. The cheapo in me isn't ready to get a new phone after 3 years, as we never seem to have the right plan for a free to reduced upgrade. I'm going to have DH try to research that.
I'm fairly certain I'm eating the equivalent of a gas station egg right now, which is sushi from a restaurant that definitely is not equipped to deal with this heat wave. But it was $14 so here goes.

They only close the schools without ac. My kids elementary, middle and high school all don’t have AC. At this rate they could be short over 6000 minutes of education by graduation compared to their peers who happen to go to schools with AC.
My husband and I are supposed to go on a weekend getaway tomorrow (we have flights…) and MIL was coming up to watch our kids. She has a fever 😭😭😭. Im currently trying to find friends to take them at night (they’re fine solo during the day — 12 and 14) but I’m so bummed that we might have to cancel
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
