Y’all are better parents than me. Teach my kids how to play a game and then be forced to play it with them and mediate tears and fights? Pass. Whenever people buy my kids games as gifts I think “why do you hate me?”
Just me?
Haha! Board games have been more fun with DD1 since she’s gotten older (8.5 now). DD2 has a different personality (not as competitive, often lets me win LOL) so she’s much more fun to play with.
The thing I’m sick of is art kits! The problem being that people gift ones that are too hard for the kids to do alone, so I end up sitting with them the whole time while they get frustrated that it isn’t turning out like the picture. I’m so over them!!!
OMG I hated the art kits when DS was younger. He could not be trusted with paint by himself. And also science kits! Why would I want to show my little kid all about chemical reactions? He'll learn about it when he's older and will actually understand it. Someone gave DS a microscope a couple of years ago and I hid it because it was way too much work for me to figure it out lol.

Oh I love art kits lol. My kids will entertain themselves forever with them.
too funny, we are the opposite. We LOVE family games with S. He HATES art kits, lol.
OP, the favorites in our home for 5 years old that were not already mentioned were not so much board games but card games: Taco, cat, goat, cheese, pizza. Go fish. Uno. Found It (this was the very first one and we still use it at restaurants today to entertain us all)

thanks all! I added a few to our list. I'm looking for ideas to keep her occupied and cut down on our screen time. She likes art and art kits but flies through them in two minutes so they aren't all effective with time wasting.
Outfoxed. Race to the treasure Hoot hoot owl Catan Jr Ticket to Ride Jr Monopoly Jr. (I hate, hate regular monopoly, Chutes and Ladders and Candy Land)
We are big gamers & have 40+ kids' games, after donating a bunch. Faves for 5yo around here: Busytown Zingo Sums in Space Spot It Jr Uno Hoot Owl Hoot Sleeping Queens Custom relatives Memory game from Shutterfly Cupcake Party (Disney Princesses) - I kind of hate the theme but admittedly it's tactilely pleasing and fun
Puzzle "games" like Camelot Jr SmartGames Red Riding Hood Space Sudoku
I'm going to strongly downvote the following: Sneaky Snacky Squirrel Monopoly Jr
Guess in 10 junior Spot It Both of these can be completed fairly quickly with a decisive end.
I have never finished hi hi cherrio or candyland. I had fond memories of both as a kid, and bought them for my 5 year old and almost immediately regretted it lol. There's so many traps that cause the game to drag on and on.

So my 5 year old LOVES family trivia pursuit. She played it ALL weekend with her sister who is 12. She actually is pretty good at the kids questions---she can't read though so my 12 year old has me being the "reader" her questions.
My 5 year old is OBSESSED with board games. He could play them all day. Some of his favorites:
Jenga Sorry Don’t break the ice Penguins on ice Bingo (I like sight word bingo) Cootie bug game Chutes and ladders Candyland Guess who Mancala Battleship Eye found it board game Perfection Hide the poop
One thing you can also do is to add character or theme versions. We have Disneyland candy land, marvel chutes and ladders, mario uno, bluey trouble, etc. If siblings are playing, I’d HIGHLY recommend against games where one player might owe money to another (like monopoly). The amount of time they spend fighting is far greater than the amount of time actually spent playing.
