I don't really tip beyond normal. My hair stylist gets their regular tip if I see them around the holidays, no cleaning person, no door person, no one around here tips the trash guys, no teachers (no kids in my house), no dog walker, the mail person isn't consistent--we don't have the same one daily. I'll toss an extra dollar or two into the tip jar at the fast casual restaurants I'm a regular at. If my bike gets fixed I'll bring in some Diet Coke and Coke Zero for the bike shop guys; they prefer that to beer at my shop. That's about it.

Someone has a milk man? Did I just time travel?
I never would have tipped anyone listed here a holiday bonus. I didn't even know it was a thing until this place. I don't have relationships with really anyone, and I typically live a pretty anonymous life what with apartments and renting and moving so frequently.
I'm also surprised at trash collection by hand. They had the arms in my early childhood memories. Eventually they even had it for recycling, before I was out of high school.

I don’t have a lot of “service people” to tip. I double my tip to the hairdresser, barber, and waxing lady but I definitely don’t tip the cost of the service. I live in a townhouse, we have a community dumpster so no garbage person to tip. I have only once tipped our mailman, when we live in another city and our mailman was amazing. We have a rotation of mail persons of our community, at least 3-4 people.
I’m a dog walker and definitely nobody tips me, nor do I expect it. I’ll sometimes get a present, candle or a dog themed coffee cup, which is nice and appreciated. Once I got this amazing lip serum-balm something that I’m now addicted to.
I need ham like water Like breath, like rain I need ham like mercy From Heaven's gate Sometimes ham salad or casserole or ham that’s free range, all natural I need ham

If I'm getting my hair or nails done during the holiday season I might tip a little more than usual (25% vs 20%), but if I don't have anything scheduled during the holiday season I don't worry about it.
The only time I've had a house cleaner was when we lived overseas, and I followed the local custom of giving her double her usual pay for the last cleaning before Christmas.
I have never tipped mail carriers or trash collectors, and I don't know anyone in my real life who does that. I never knew that was a thing until this board.
Tipping extra at the holidays is nice, but IMO it's not required and it's not some terrible faux pas if you don't.
This discussion every year will remind me of Elle and her totally out of touch snobbery elitism.
.
Do tell…was she not into tipping people below her? Or was it the opposite
She told me that I should tip my landlord and mailman, and if I can’t afford to do so, I shouldn’t live in NYC (or something like that). And another time, everyone was talking about their holiday bonuses and she and another poster laughed/shamed the poors who got less than 5 figures for a bonus.

Wow. That is beyond out of touch.
My DH got a bonus for the first time this year and I was beyond thrilled…and it was nowhere near 5 figures.

My dad was a milk man back in the day and his holiday tips bought my large family (8 kids) a very special meal at a fancy restaurant every year. It was the hugest deal because we NEVER went to restaurants otherwise.
We tip our house cleaner the price of one cleaning every December.
Cleaning lady gets the cost of a cleaning The neighborhood crossing guard gets a very small cash tip + card The mailman I give a $25 GC because he's awesome Then the normal teacher + afterschool people gift cards
I give my hair stylist a 25% tip every 7 weeks (~$40) so I'm not inclined to tip her extra
I don't do extra tips for the holidays, the people we hire for services are paid well and we don't really know anyone that we don't hire directly (trash, mail, etc) that well.
Teachers get gifts and we do angel trees and other collections through school.
I tip generously for each hair service I get throughout the year.
Our housecleaners and dog walkers change so often that it doesn't make sense to do a holiday tip. i make sure to tip each cleaning, and if we have a dog walker for a long period, i'll try to do a "bonus" every quarter.
Mail and trash? I dont tip. To me, that's one of those - its your job. Maybe I'm a grinch.
Best Quote by Dwight Schrute : Why tip someone for a job I'm capable of doing myself? I can deliver food, I can drive a taxi, I can and do cut my own hair. I did, however, tip my urologist. Because I am unable to pulverize my own kidney stones.
I've always given our dog walker cash at Christmas. Now we have 2 regulars so it was double. He's a pain in the ass and they're so good to him - a lot of people aren't comfortable with big dogs. They've both also signed for and/or brought in packages and have even turned on the crockpot for me when I forgot before leaving for work. LOL They are the only help we have in life!!

Jalapeñomel, I always struggled with daycare! If the assistants would float from room to room I would usually tip less that the head teacher. If they were dedicated to one room, then I would tip them all the same. Philosophy being they would be getting tips from families in all the different rooms they are in.
We tip housecleaner, and dog walker. I had forgotten about garbage man. In our old neighborhood you could tell who tipped the garbagemen, as they were the ones they would drag the bins back to the house. It was some of the best money spent, especially if it was windy or snowy, not worrying about them blowing away.

I tip my hair dresser, that's it. I have been going to her for six years every 8 weeks. We have a lot in common and I consider her a friend, so maybe it's more of a gift and less of a tip. I take it in on a day that I don't have an appointment in a Christmas card.
