Speaking of our favorite things, has anyone ever been to a favorite things party? Apparently it's a "thing" now, thanks to Pinterest.
The idea is that everyone buys 5 of their favorite item in the $5-6 range. Each person takes their turn at the party showing off their item and then drawing 5 names to determine who gets one. Each person should leave the party with 5 different things that other people brought.
I was thinking of hosting one of these as an excuse to have a get-together. Of course, there would be food and booze involved.
Sounds like fun, esp. if it were with friends. If it were held with a group of strangers, then I'd probably be more inclined to think I'd end up with stuff I hated like HoneySpider said.
Eh, not exactly lame, just not sure I'd be into it. I mean, what if I hate the other people's stuff? Then I'm going home with a bunch of crap, haha.
That's what I'm worried about! I'm worried everyone would bring candles or smelly lotion that I don't really want. Or just $5 Starbucks giftcards, which is useful but the party wouldn't be much fun if people just passed around giftcards.
It sounds like most people like the idea, so I think I'm going to give it a shot
ETA: Definitely ladies only. I'd probably do it with my moms' club.

Yeah I could see this either being really awesome or really sucky depending on who was there and what they bring. I guess you don't know until you try it, right?
If you try it, let us know how it goes, I'm curious what people bring

I would like this but only with my main group of friends. Otherwise tastes could vary too much and snobby me would get the shaft while everyone else raved over what I consider to be lame crap. And I would be ok with a co-ed party, but I think I have a higher than normal percentage of male friends with good taste.

I would maybe make a no gift card rule, and I'd make sure that the people you invite have fairly similar interests so their favorite things will maybe overlap.
Maybe you could ask each guest to attach a card to each item describing why it is wonderful?

My coworker always does this with her circle of friends in December. They do this instead of exchanging holiday gifts. We wait like little kids on Christmas morning for her to bring in the goods the next day at work! It's fun to see what they come up with- some are practical, some are exotic, some are edible, and no gift cards. I think they set a price limit, but I'm not sure what it is, exactly.
She often regifts items if they aren't her thing, BTW.
I had one of these and it was a hit! Guests asked for another one and so I've had two so far.
One thing that helped was that in the invitation I gave suggestions of some types of favorite things they could bring...like their favorite nail polish, magazine, kitchen tool, etc. That got them thinking outside of the 'lotion and candle' box a little bit.
I also told them I'd love if they brought any other favorite products that were maybe above the price limit, just as a show-and-tell type thing. Sounds lame but people put a lot of thought into it and by time the party was over I had my own little wish list of useful products to try.
We also discussed favorite day trips, pizza places, local restaurants and got some good suggestions from each other.
I had some favorite foods out to eat (ben&jerrys red velvet ice cream, ghiradhelli brownies, Simply limeade, etc.) as light appetizers.
I realize most people don't want a party this structured but thought I'd give a few ideas of what worked for me!
