We got about 4 inches of rain last night. I think I missed the worst of it because my commute home wasn't actually that bad (and no traffic since so many things closed early!). We get torrential downpours sometimes here where it looks like buckets of water are being dumped, but I didn't see any of that.
I applied for two different rescue dogs in the last week - one is a mini poodle (not a toy poodle) and one is a shih tzu. I haven't heard back from either rescue, which I think is normal but I'm anxious! We don't want both dogs, but I do want to find out more information about them and potentially meet them both. I understand it's hard for rescues because they are volunteer run, but I wish there was a better way to get more information about the dogs before applying for them. They both sound like they could be a good fit, but with only a short paragraph of information it's hard to really know. Fingers crossed one of them works out!
Dog wouldn’t go out in the rain yesterday. Finally got her out around 10pm. So, 15 hours of refusals and holding it. And then, she was up all night with belly issues. Ugh. I’m dragging. I took 1-3 but then had to tap out and put it on H. I’m dragging this morning.
Mine would be outside all the time if we let her. She was shocked I made her go on a short walk at lunch because it started raining again. Like, DUDE, I don't need to look like a wet rat.
Our previous dog was like that. 20* and snowing, and she’d want to be sitting outside for hours. We’d have to make her come back in.
in other news, H and I are currently fighting about the chimney leaking. We’ve tried waterproofing it. We have a new roof, so it’s not the flashing, and they came back out and assessed during a storm, tarped it, and waterproofed it. I called a couple chimney repair places because I guess we need the mortar redone or something. Chimney estimates are not free. Which put H on a money thing, and he wants to put more waterproofing up there. Like, commit to waterproofing it every year for the next 15 years or whatever. Fuck that. I want it repaired. He is very useful on DIY inside the house, but accept this is outside your area and let the pros do it. Please.

Has anyone looked at the chimney cap? We got a new roof and replaced the box around the chimney, and it started to rot again almost immediately. The cap was bad and letting water in.
We have skylights that perpetually leak and I go up every year to waterproof, so I get why that is a bad idea to do!!
Did you throw away your toothbrush the first time? I learned the hard way a few years ago when I got strep twice in a few weeks.
My daughter had strep at the beginning of December for the first time ever. No sore throat at all, just a super high temp. Went on antibiotics and it finally went away. Just last week she spiked a high temp again with an illness that 100% mimicked the strep, but when they tested her, it wasn’t strep (or flu or covid). But now I’m wondering if it was because we didn’t change out her toothbrush (we did after this most recent illness). I feel like a lightbulb just went off in my head when you said that. None of the doctors this time around asked but I wonder if this is what caused her illness 🤔
I never even thought of it until my husband said something the second time around.

Boyfriend got his settlement check! I’m so happy we can cover the hospital bills! Can we negotiate them though? Or would the hospital expect payment in full since the funds are from an accident settlement?
I want to ring them and ask for a final total and ask if they would offer for a discount for paid in full today, he thinks we should pay what they say.
I feel pretty bad, and it feels similar to when I first got strep a few weeks ago. What are the chances I would get it again so soon?! Last time was the very first time I've gotten it in my life.
Covid test was negative. I really don't want to go wait at UC and get a test (both because $ and those tests suck). Not sure if it could be something else?
Today is also day 1 of a conference I'm registered for, so I'm debating what to do about that...

I don't know where I learned this, but anytime I'm sick with anything that requires antibiotics I change my toothbrush. I had to toss lots of otherwise perfectly good toothbrushes in college 😕
My random today: I hate being hot, but my skin apparently hates the cold dry air more. I have two skin fissures at the tips of my thumb and third finger on my right hand. Clearly I need to increase my lotion game. My problem is I wash my hands or have them doing something involving water all the time. So I apply lotion, then go do something like dishes or cooking or cleaning whatever filthy thing/room has caught my eye and wash all the lotion off in the process.
Advice? Do I actually need to buy rubber gloves? I mean... the fissures are painful, but I don't know if they're 'that' bad 😕
SwimDeep, I'd increase the quality and quantity of my lotion and get gloves for stuff with prolonged water submersion. Dry painful hands are the worst!

We’ve had the roofers back a couple times, but not a chimney expert.
But, right now, the neighbors have a guy in their roof inspecting their chimney flashing. They had their roof redone about 6 months ago. I’m going to guess they are having the same problem. And, their house is the same age as ours (1968), so, it would make since we are having the same problems with mortar age. This supports my theory that we need a chimney guy to assess the mortar. 😫$$$ if it has to be redone.

I would totally ask. They are always desperate to be paid.

I'm using Eucerin Advanced Repair right now. It helps the excema on the back of my hands, but I can't keep it on the fingertips long enough for it to do any good. I have some Working Hands that I bought for H years ago. I might try that today. ...and I guess I'll start shopping for gloves 😓

My DH used to work outside in northern Iowa and would get terribly dry and cracked skin in the winters. He swears by slathering his hands in Bag Balm right before bed and then wearing scrunchie socks overnight.

I started my day off with a cold shower because the hot water heater is leaking 😩😩
One of the few joys of renting - we don't need to pay to fix it, just coordinate whatever repairs.
Both kids are off to school today. A was dragging. L was up early but very nervous for her new semester of classes. I think she has a friend in each class so hopefully her day will be good.
Jesus. DD is STILL NOT added to my health insurance so I inquired with HR again. Turns out the person handling my case is out for a few days and new person is handling it but they don’t have my completed application on file. So I had to resend it and I pointed out that it was sent on Jan 3 at a specific time.
Officially annoyed.
Dd has a Doctor appointment tomorrow. I may have to reschedule.

I am dealing with the same issue on my fingertips and it's so painful. I have been trying to put lotion on as much as I can. I am buying white cotton gloves today and going to see if putting those on after using lotion will help. And rubber gloves for cleaning and doing the dishes.

This is likely not what you want to hear, but they probably don't have any additional information. For the rescue I volunteer with (a very large one with 1000+ adoptions a year), we just don't have much information about a dog before, or even once, they arrive. Our time in rescue for small, desirable dogs like the ones you applied for is also very short and we get a huge number of applications.
The best thing to do, for these applications and any future ones, is to follow all of the instructions they give you as quickly as possible. I also strongly recommend getting pre-qualified at large, local rescues if that is an option.

Thanks! Do people usually meet a dog and then make a decision, or do they just take it home completely blind? I've only rescued from shelters in the past where you don't get a ton of information, but you at least get the meet the pet and see how it interacts with you. I guess that's the part that I'm a little unsure about, especially since I do have a princess cat at home that is not going to be ok with a super hyper dog in its face all the time. I know that pets take a while to completely adjust to their new home anyway, I guess.

FWIW, they can back date insurance for something like this so unless they can't get it straightened out at all and she ends up uninsured (which sounds unlikely), you can always just go to the appointment and straighten out billing once you get the info for your new policy. It will show coverage as of January 1st once this is all figured out.

Always ask for the discount! Plus it's none of their business where you got the money. I ask for a both a "prompt pay" discount (even if it's not prompt) and a "paid in full" discount. The majority of the time I've saved 10-20%. They sometimes say no when it's due as part of your deductible, but even then I've been lucky.
wildrice, when we were looking for our dog, every rescue had us meet and spend some time with the dog before deciding. We had to fill out applications first, but once we were approved we could meet more than just the dog that originally caught our eye online.

I have a new employee who is great at her job, but she has a habit of getting distracted by her Apple watch and it drives me nuts. I'll be teaching her something and her eyes will flick to her watch, and she's clearly received a text or email. She does it during meetings as well, it's not subtle. She'll even do it when she's the one talking. I honestly don't even think she realizes she's doing it. I've started asking her if she's waiting for urgent information (because who knows, maybe she is) and that seemed to clue her in. I'm hoping I don't need to have a more official convo with her.
It's honestly the one reason why I don't want a smart watch, because I know I'd be tempted to do the same thing.

Some rescues you can meet beforehand, some you can’t. Most dogs come from the South, and some stay in southern foster homes until they’re adopted, then they’re transported. Some rescues bring the dogs up to foster so you can meet them at their local foster. If a dog is a local surrender or pull from the shelter then you’d be able to meet them beforehand as well.
wildrice, very exciting and I hope that one of these dogs works out for you! If not, though, I will second sarahsays recommendation that you try to follow larger rescues in your area and get pre-approved.
My experience with trying to adopt a smaller dog 6 years ago was that by the time my new application was processed, the dog had already been adopted by someone pre-approved. Those dogs are highly desirable and go faster than volunteers are able to process a new application.

Kind of a lazy, slow day here with not much work I have to do. Our snow storm yesterday meant I could stay home on the day we normally go to the office. I haven’t been in since Dec 5 since they didn’t require us to go in the rest of the year or Jan 2.
All the side streets are frozen slush and we have another even bigger storm coming Friday. I’m disappointed because we have reservations Sat to go to another town and have lunch in their tea room. It was something to look forward to during these drab winter days. However, I’ll probably have to reschedule because it’s a lot of country road driving and I doubt they’ll be in good condition that soon after the storm.

The bolded makes me feel kind of bad about focusing on those. There are so many dogs who need homes, it sucks that we're all looking for the same types of dogs!
Personally I would be thrilled with any dog, and have a slight preference for larger dogs, but this is a compromise with my H (and my cat) since he really doesn't want something big or that sheds a ton. It's taken me years to get him to say yes to ANY dog so I want to get something he's less likely to be irritated by... but it definitely limits things!
We got our dogs DNA back! No huge surprises (a litter mate had it done a year ago) but he is a little different as far as percentages. I got to see some of his relatives which is making me so happy. But there one who is a “half sibling” on his mothers side who was found on the side of the road with his litter mates which means whoever owns the mom keeps dumping her puppies and it’s hurting my heart.

We also had other extenuating factors: we had elementary-age kids at the time, so dog had to be good with kids, and needed to be good with both cats and other dogs. From the rescue side, we were first time dog owners AND both worked outside the home at the time (albeit on staggered schedules, but still a 6-hour window where the dog would be alone) AND did not have fenced yard, which multiple rescues counted against us. We really needed a unicorn dog.
So if your only limitation is that you want a smaller, cat-friendly, dog, you will probably still have a lot more dogs available to you than we did.
House is quiet again today. DS had a 2 hour delay but I drove him to before care on time b/c the roads were fine. Our basement wasn't too wet this morning thankfully.
Had to take my cat for her annual vet checkup this morning and otherwise it's been a pretty quiet day at work so that's nice. It is SO windy out. I've been trying to, in addition to my workouts, go for a walk a few times a week just for like 15-20 minutes in the afternoon to get some fresh air, but I don't think today's going to be one of those days. Yeesh.
