I struggle with this everytime I swim. At a vegas hotel, I would bring minimal stuff (room key, id, cc, phone, magazine) and bury them in a small bag with clothes but now I have a nicer phone and a kindle I'd likely not bring. At a beach (like walking a block from a hotel or driving), I am always staring at my bag from the water (and worry too much). I do have a plastic neck tote that can hold my id, cc, and key fob. Maybe I'll go look for a bigger one that can hold my phone too because I have a cruise shore excursion next month involving a swim and I won't trust anyone.
The one place I take more risk is a snorkel cruise because the would-be thief cannot easily escape.
I rarely put my head in the water... maybe they make a waterproof hat-tote, lol.

The only time I’ve ever really felt the need for something like this at at a large water park where I leave my stuff and have to go stand in line for 30+ minutes. In those cases I lock everything in a locker and keep my phone and debit card in a waterproof case around my neck.

We go to the beach often. We leave our wallets in the car and only have our keys and phones. If we go into the water we put them under everything in the bag. Normally we can see our stuff when we’re in the water. If we go to the snack/bar shack we bring our phones and have the keys with us since we need to stop to grab a wallet.
We go to the beach almost daily in the summer and I have never had any issues. I don't bring my full wallet but leave my ID, cash and phone in my bag while swimming or on a walk with the kids without thinking too much about it. Maybe I will get burned doing that one day but so far so good? If I had my full wallet I would prob leave it in my car in the trunk compartment or something with the car locked.
same, I just wing it and think good thoughts, lol.
And at the pool? Forget about it, my purse and all its contents just sit out next to our blanket with the beach bag. We are in a small little community with very little crime like this.

We go to the beach in Europe often and we typically bring our hotel key, euros for beach chairs/snacks and possibly our phones. We keep them in the bottom of our bag and put our clothing on top (we wear shorts/tshirt on top of bathing suit). Never had an issue.

We go to the pool a lot in summer and honestly if someone's going to want to get what we take they can have it. In my bag is my kindle, sunglasses, towel and car keys. I keep my wallet secured in my car with the doors locked. There's on average 5 lifeguards and/or people watching over the pool/chair area that I'm not worried. When we do go the beach we keep the beach bag under the chair with almost nothing in it. I will keep a small wristlet at the bottom of the bag with no more than $10 in it.
We have used these things a million times and love them - water parks, neighborhood pool, the ocean. We've never had a problem with anything inside getting wet.
