glitzy07, I am so relieved you are all ok but what a terrifying start to the day!
We are in the 99.1 percent zone for the eclipse and work is absolutely deserted. Most of my team works from home on Mondays and the rest are off and I'm fairly certain I won't see my boss today. I may just go home at lunch.
@jenkies I have a question for you, since our Hs work in similar facilities. He has a uniform that he changes into in a locker room, with showers. So he is not wearing his own clothing to work. But I keep getting onto him about him stinking. Last night, we determined it’s his hoodie. It seems just sitting in the locker room it’s soaking up a smell. And it’s a weird smell. Not what you would expect, and not B.O, but definitely has unpleasant notes. And H can’t smell it, so I am pretty sure it’s facility related. Do you have this problem and any suggestions?
On the plus note, we have passed the 6 month probationary period. And H had agreed to give it six months. And he has said he is content and not actively looking.
In a true random, I woke up with New Moon on Monday stuck in my head. Not quite an eclipse song, but moon and Monday. Lol.
Glad he is content! I was thinking about you recently because I thought I remembered that your H had hurt himself a while ago and it led to him questioning his job. Glad he is doing well!
H's job has a laundry service, so his dirty clothes generally don't come home. We haven't noticed an issue with clean clothes picking up a smell from the locker room, but I don't think their locker room is in the same building as any of the work areas.
Could you set up a laundry basket in the garage for any items that have been to work? Or just have hooks in the garage for coats/hoodies that go to work but don't get washed after every use?
Yeah, I’m thinking that. And to really draw a line between work stuff and home stuff. The issue is on weekends, he puts on a “work hoodie” to work around the house. And then I’m all “man, you stink!” But, honestly, it was just last night we figured out it was the fabric, not him. 🤣. Poor guy, I’ve been complaining about him stinking and it’s not him.
yeah, he did have an injury and was stressing it so bad. But, he quickly realized that everyone around realized a month of light duty for him was the best solution. It takes them 6 months to hire, and they just hit full staffing, after working on it for 18 months. No one wanted to roll back that. And he is fine now.
sent, I'm not super into it either but I probably will go outside at the peak. I remember from 2017 there are these kind of cool wavy lines on the pavement and it was really surreal for a few minutes. The only other eclipse I really remember was in 1984 and that is barely a memory.
holly116, we went to the Destin, FL, area last week. On the way down (from MI), we got stuck in traffic and also detoured on the backroads of Alabama. DH and I are not fans of driving through the night, but that's what we did on the way home to avoid traffic backups/delays. We hit Nashville at 2 am on a Friday, and it was smooth sailing through the whole metro area. We're going to go back there for spring break next year, and DH and I are already planning on driving through the night both ways. We hate sitting in traffic more than we hate driving through the night, lol.
My manager often speaks in a sing songvoice when greeting those of us that work for her (but not anyone else), and I need some sort of mental strategy to help me not be annoyed by it. I have no idea what I’m looking for though.
I plan to *elevate* my day by watching the eclipse. We are around 85% totality. In 2017 we were right in the path of the eclipse. I have my special paper glasses! School here will be out by 1:00 for most students.

rubytue, I forget where your dh got a job, but my dad was a mechanic growing up, and even though he wore coveralls over his clothes, changed and showered before coming home, and washed his hands with lye soap, he still had the smell of 'grease' for lack of a better term on his boots and anything that was in his truck. He combated it by having a metal 'locker' type thing in our garage/basement (depending on the house) that he kept his work stuff in, and then showering again when he got home no matter what pretty much. He also kept the lye soap (not sure if it was pure lye or what, but it removed grease and oil and I remember being lectured as a kid not to touch it) at our laundry utility sink and washed his hands there to try to get the oil and grease out from under his nails and whatnot, so there's another use for a utility sink lol. But this post seriously brought back my 'dad's work smell' so viscerally I couldn't not respond. It wasn't a bad smell really, but so distinct.
expectantsteelerfan, he is working for the county wastewater treatment facility. He is about 50% on site and 50% in the field maintaining the pumping stations. I think the smell is basically the dried product, as my understanding is they dry the solids in rooms with huge fans. And I bet that dust and stuff flies all around the facility.
But, you know, I am super glad to figure out what it is, and it’s not that H has become someone who doesn’t shower enough 🤣
MH is coaching both kids soccer teams and I am unofficially assistant coaching. The first game for both was a lot of fun. I used to coach high school girls in grad school and it's now coming back to me that it's a lot of fun!
I need to book a hotel/Airbnb in Paris for 6 days for myself, 13 yo DD, sister, and mom and I have reached my limit on research. Someone tell me where/what area I need to stay. Is it worth extra $$$$ to be closer? We're all seasoned travelers.
The number of posts I have seen on Facebook and Nextdoor this morning asking where to get eclipse glasses is mind boggling. They seemed shocked that most places have been sold out for at least a week too.

We've done the drive-through-the-night thing in the past, but my kids no longer sleep in the car at all so we had thought the benefit had dropped off. Nashville isn't usually the issue, it's the accidents on 65 in the middle of Alabama that tend to snag us.
We left before 6 for the drive down, but it was also Easter, and we had no traffic issues. The hope was that they'd be sleepy but instead, they were super excited and wide awake.
We have to go to DC for a long weekend in June and it's 8 hours so maybe we'll try again with the early morning/middle of the night driving. I've spent my morning setting up Google flight alerts lol.

glitzy07 yikes! So glad you all are OK. I'm sure you are feeling amped up today.
emilyinchile Yay, happy wedding week! So glad you had a fun bachelorette and one that matched your likes. Sending you all the best and thoughts of clear skys and temps in the 70s!
What is with boomers and their devices? OMG. My mom is constantly on her phone or on her laptop watching YouTube videos of either live courtroom cases or police body cam footage.
Anyway. My merit increase and salary adjustment numbers came in today and it’s a 9.25% increase total which is very nice! Less awesome is that since I was promoted halfway through the year, my bonus is going to be a prorated percentage which I didn’t know so I’ll be getting a little bit less than I’d been estimating, but it’s nice to even get one so that’s ok.
glitzy07, That's so scary! I am glad everything is ok (other than your deck, I guess) but that must have been terrifying to wake up to.
rubytue, have you tried Rover for dog sitting? I found someone fairly easily there - there are a lot of different price points but the person I went with is going to stay at our house some of the time. I think she could stay for all of it, but I told her it was also fine to bring our dog back to her place if it's more comfortable for sleeping. I'm not sure if she has her own pets or not. I haven't actually used her yet so she could be awful, but she had good reviews! I saw a number of other options when I was looking, too. Or could your friend just stay at your place and house sit?
I never bothered with getting glasses for the eclipse, so I guess I'm just skipping it. I think I'll just close the curtains and pretend nothing is happening - all the tiktoks I am seeing about people who looked at the sun and regretted it make me nervous. Which is silly because I go most days without looking at the sun, but today I'm worried I will accidentally do that lol.
I am putting together a bulletin board for AAPI history month in May, any suggestions for people/books/foods/historical info that I should include? I'm doing research right now and finding plenty, but I don't want to miss something important!
wildrice, I did rover once. With 6 months, I should probably start now and I could find someone. I think I’m mostly stressed over the fact that this is a problem we have (antisocial dog) and so few trusted options, and uts always my mental load to solve. Plus, I really wanted to rent this basement.

The oldz....sigh. I had posted that my dad is going to help me out by buying a home for me in cash, which I'll rent through the divorce then buy from him after it's final. So I saw a really perfect townhouse yesterday where I can still have the 2 dogs (and cats but I wasn't concerned about that). Offers are due at 6pm today, so my sister told him he'll need to produce proof of funds for the cash sale. Welllllll, he's got the money scattered across like 6 different accounts in MA, he's in FL for a couple more weeks and he is NOT an online banking kind of person. He told my sister to basically just tell the selling realtor he's good for it when she said he would need proof of funds to put in an offer. That obviously isn't going to fly and now he's scurrying around trying to get this info in time for the deadline. If it doesn't happen it's ok, something else will come up, but it would be nice to have that piece of the puzzle in place soon!
DH's birthday is tomorrow and I have a couple gifts for him, but I feel like I needed to make it big and I just don't know what to get him.
He did just get a new grill, but like he's doing a ton of solo parenting, never complains, or anything.
He got an amazon package and I asked what it was and he said it was for him, but also for me and they're special clamps because I've been asking him to build me something, but he didn't have the right tools.

For real! My H commented that he was going to sell his for $100 at this point LOL
I feel pressured to care about the eclipse, but I do not. I remember this happening in 2017 too, and I scrambled at the last minute to make a cereal box viewer. I seem to remember being extremely underwhelmed by looking at shadows. Idk I'll probably take DD outside when it peaks in our area (we are 90%) but I feel like I'm missing something. There was a news segment this morning with people talking about how magical and spiritual it is, so maybe I'm just broken.
I'm with you, jinkies. I've been doing a lot of smiling and nodding because I think it's great that others are excited about it but I just don't get it.

I feel the same way, the only reason I have glasses is because H got them at work. I'll wander outside at the peak but really just because it's a chance to go outside. I'm in the office today so lots of folks will go to the top of the parking ramp attached to my building so I'll go there mainly to chat with people LOL
Add me to the list of not really caring about the eclipse. It's super cool, but not something I'm willing to risk long-term vision damage to look at. The kids' schools are providing glasses to look and I am kind of regretting not opting to have them stay inside. I'm surprised our district was willing to take on the liability.

I FINALLY pinned my boss down on promotion/raise things. Lots of hold ups due to higher ups and things out of our control. But, my full promotion is official AND I’m getting a 10% raise! My bonus won’t happen til end of year, and that *should* be a higher percentage based off all this new info but again, I won’t know til November. But I’m feeling much better about this job today!

We had never been to Destin before, so it was our first time with that drive, but we did gasp in horror as we drove through AL and the miles-upon-miles long backup headed north (while we were headed south) for the spring break was ending as ours was starting. The backup we detoured on the way down was bad enough. We definitely didn't want to deal with Nashville traffic, but also definitely did not want to sit on 65 in AL for extra hours.
After we got home, my DD said she barely slept on the way home (we were in the car from 7 pm to 11 am, so definitely she should have slept at least somewhat normal hours, at least in total), so I can understand. We will either give DD some melatonin or dramamine (she gets motion sickness) for the drive next year.
Speaking of flights, DH and I were also talking about flying next year, if we can get a good price on tickets. That's a good idea to set a Google Flights alert.
