maudefindlay and expectantsteelerfan thanks for the advice. It seems like there was always stuff going on when my kids were little with school and outside activities and socializing and that has all ended for various reasons. I recently moved and while my neighbors are mostly nice, they aren’t exactly friend material. I wish I could find a newcomers type group! I will check out meetup. It is sort of brutal for adults. I briefly entertained putting up a dating profile but I’m super insecure so that is a no.
court26 - I don’t think you live in DFW, but if you do hit me up!
Haha, I was going to say the same for NE Illinois.
I’m always up for new friends.
I'll plug with an invite from central WA state court26.
It is hard to find friends who aren't super religious (insert religion/Jesus into every topic) and/or a Republican in my red city. I've found exactly one friend in 4 years.

We are in a blue state in a pretty blue area and I met my best friend here through our kids. We were both so excited that we are socialists.
court26, I found making an online dating profile to be daunting at first, especially because I was very insecure to begin. However, my confidence greatly improved once I started interacting and swiping and matching. I'd encourage you to give it a try! It's very low-risk!
You could also try Bumble Friend. My friend moved to a new city and used that to find people to meet and hangout with.
Holy shit I just read about a lady who died from her injuries after a DEER crashed through the WINDSHIELD of a car she was in.
LIKE WHAT.
Give me the city all day long.
This is not uncommon, unfortunately. When I was a teenager, I swerved to avoid hitting a deer and totalled my car. When my parents came to help my mom said something like “next time just hit the deer” and the cop said he saw more severe injuries and deaths from deer coming through windshields than he saw from people swerving to avoid, and that the fact I was walking away meant I did just fine.
A friend of mine is terrified of every and all animals. Like won’t run outside by herself because she’s scared of encountering a deer or turkey. The irony that one day she was driving on a busy road and a deer just rammed into the side of her car. She was ok, the car ok-ish, and the deer not so lucky.
I’m very excited for the Bluey special. For sure more excited than my kids are lol
What Bluey special?!? My kids would love this! (And me too truthfully)
There is a 28 minute special premiering tomorrow. I think it might be the last one for a long time. They also just added a normal length episode, so check that one out too.
I hosted a party at a very, very loud arcade/ride place for 16 kids today, and I need a day to introvert. Alas, tomorrow is a bridal shower and another birthday party. Sometimes it is hard to believe we were ever in a pandemic with nothing on our schedules.
It’s been a full weekend already. Friday I was off and ran a few errands. My new fav thing is to buy a few flowers from Trader Joe’s and arrange them. This week I spent about $20 and it’s so beautiful!
Today we took the kids to see the King Kong movie. It was ok. We were just dying to go to the theatre, then we went to dinner at my SILs. Thankfully tomorrow I can chill all day. Will prob do some laundry and lounge.
Remember the days of long intro credits to tv shows? I've noticed streaming has returned to that. Watching old series, I've noticed the time creep smaller and smaller. L&O went from 70+ secnonds to 50 to almost nothing.
Apple tv and other streaming shows have returned to long credits. I just clocked 80 (8 clicks of fast forward 10 seconds, lest someone think I actually track).
I am happy it shows an appearance of resistance to ad dollars. But, am I wrong? I cannot imagine apple or disney giving up easy money.
Not sure I’m following but are you saying longer credits means less show time so less ad $$? Generally streaming services have a certain amount of ad time per hour regardless of show run time. It’s different for long form movies, but for shows the ad time is based on time spent viewing the platform, not the program.
I'm saying the opposite. Shows started cutting credits to fit in more ad revenue prior to streaming services. We could maybe ff if we had dvr. It's pretty distinct if you watch shows like ER that span the shift. On streaming, I've seen a return of long credits.
It makes sense if they get credit for the show regardless. It's so easy to ff on streaming that I'm just curious about it. Who does it benefit?

I assume folks that make the shows just like to see their names on screen. When ER first started ratings were astronomical so price per ad was very high. I can’t say for certain but assume there is a correlation between the timing of credits getting shorter and linear TV ratings starting to decline which was when cable started to take off and viewers had more options.
I fly out today and haven’t packed. I have all my outfits in my brain, I just need to throw them in my suitcase. My toiletry bag is mostly packed all the time already. Just hoping traffic to the airport isn’t awful.
I took E and I for pedicured and totally overtipped, but whatever. I totally wasn’t paying attention to the total and just handed the woman $20 and asked her to split between the two ladies. I realized when we got home the pedicures were $32 each, whoops!
emilyinchile - I hope you had a dream wedding day and may you have a long and happy marriage!
I jolted awake early this morning dreaming I was getting a call from work. It was only a dream, this time, but telling how much my job has consumed my life. I’m hopeful this current chaos will eventually settle down a bit, but in the meantime I keep running the numbers to figure out my absolute earliest retirement date. Sadly, it’s still too far off to be helpful, short of winning powerball. lol.
I desperately need to figure out how to balance everything. Thankfully my H is super supportive, but I’ve stopped exercising, gained a ton of weight, and am having trouble shutting off my To Do list in my head. I know exercise is at least part of the solution, but I can’t seem to jump start it.

I think some streaming channels like Apple are trying to seem prestigious and are returning to long titles because they seem fancier and more like old school “appointment tv” if that makes sense?
I am not sure I will survive the middle school years with DD. This age just seems to be constant drama. And if there is not any actual drama, they will create it to give themselves something to talk about.
She had plans to have a sleepover with two other girls next week. Then I found out that their entire friend group is only 4 or 5 girls total, and they just were going to not invite the 1 or 2 other girls, and keep the sleepover secret. Before I had a chance to tell DD that I didn't want her to be part of that, there was a big blowup where one of the girls brought up a fight the group had 3 months ago and wanted to rehash. There was a lot of creative reimagining of what happened, instigating shit talking then screenshoting texts to send to other girls, and dramatic FaceTime calls. All in the course of like 2 hours.
Now DD doesn't want to go to the sleepover anyway. But also doesn't want to initiate more drama by dropping out.
I told her that she had two options: be honest and say that you think it would be hurtful for the left out girls to find out about being excluded from the sleepover and you didn't want to be part of something that would cause a fight. Or tell them that your mom said you couldn't go.
I really do not miss being 12. It's rough out there.

Prom night wedding reception was fun! There was a WIDE range of dress. Some in long gowns, some in sundresses and some people in jeans. Very Charleston lol. But it was great seeing a bunch of our friends at once and I got a lot of compliments on my dress. And my feet didn’t start to hurt until 4 hours in so that’s a win for heels.
Donny was extra anxious for the sitter at first (and she’s sat for them 2 times before!), hid in another room for hours, but has chilled out a bit now and hopefully having her there this weekend will help when she comes back in 2 weeks for our week in London.
court26 I'd look into adult-focused classes or workshops on anything that you might find interesting.
Pickleball leagues are big now-- I know there are multiple places near me where you can sign up for a one-day workshop or a series of classes to learn, then join the league.
I have actually done a few beginner classes with a local curling League-- it was super fun, low stakes, and curling is incredibly social. It's actually part of the game to hang out and have a drink and socialize after (called broom stacking).
If physical activities aren't your thing, you could look at art classes (pottery or glass blowing are great if you aren't into more traditional art classes in drawing or painting)
Or maybe just look at adult enrichment classes at a local college or through your township.
You never know where you will find your people! I'm a joiner by nature and like just trying different things and meeting people, even if I don't form long term friendships from it.

We missed the first part, but the end was sweet.
Watched it this morning and it was so good. I laughed so hard and then cried. How can a show about cartoon dogs be so damn good?!?! I love Bluey. 🥹 the message was really good one too (for adults and kids).
There is a park here that famously plants thousands of tulip bulbs and it’s a really popular spot to have a picnic/take pictures when they are in bloom.
The last couple years people have started setting up blankets practically in the flower beds vs in the huge swaths of empty grass so you have to get right next to them to see the tulips.
No one used to do this because it was understood that’s what we all were there to see and there is so much empty space. People would set up a blanket in the empty areas and then go over to flower beds and take pictures. Not camp out in front of them and let their children play in them. It’s just not very pleasant to be navigating all these people when you are just trying to look at a tiny flower when there is no reason for it. There is so much empty space where you’d be in no one’s way and have a view of all of the tulips.

The kids woke up early so we cpuld watch it together before I left for my show today.
court26, making friends as an adult is hard! I know a lot of nice people who live in this general area but actually getting from the acquaintance relationship to a true friendship takes a long time, especially since a lot of people already have family and/or established friend groups nearby so forming a deeper relationship with me is (understandably) not as high of a priority. I also always think it sounds nice to have friends that I hang out with often, but then when life happens I end up getting busy or lazy and not reaching out to actually make plans. I don't know what the answer is. I did recently sign up for a meetup group for women over 40+ in my county so maybe there is something like that for you?
My poor H has become a lightweight when it comes to drinking - he doesn't drink much at all these days so he accidentally overdid it at the baseball game yesterday and is pretty sick this morning. He drank the same amount he would have in the past without issue, but since he only drinks once or twice a month (and then not much) these days it was too much for him. I'm glad he did that now and not when we're on vacation next month, at least.
I clean out our fridge this morning because it was getting really disgusting. It's funny how you don't notice that kind of thing because it happens gradually, and then all of a sudden I'm like wtf are we doing with such a dirty fridge. It's now sparkling clean and hopefully will stay that way for a while. I have a lot of grading I need to do and some other general chore type stuff so it is going to be a busy day. Of course I have some kind of stomach acid thing bothering me at the moment so I'm laying on my bed, but hopefully that will pass. I think it's because I made chocolate muffins this morning (for my hungover H) and have only eaten that and coffee so far today- I need something less acidic for lunch.

I had to get up at 3 this morning to drive DD1 to the airport for her class trip. I came home and dozed on and off for about 90 minutes before I got up to meet my friend for our Sunday morning hike - and it started to rain about 2/3 of the way through. So I’m now home in warm dry clothes, exhausted, and wanting to be done for the day. But I need to start cleaning and prepping for Passover - at least DD2 has plans for most of the day and DS is content to be lazy. Maybe I’ll be able to get a nap in later.
