I commuted all 4 years and don't regret it at all. I made awesome friends, met my BFF, joined the chemistry frat, and had an awesome overall experience. Choosing to live at home also let me keep my summer job through the school year and I didn't have any SLs. Living on campus would've changed my financial situation completely.
I think living on your own is a necessity but I think it's dependent on the person's personality and what fits them as to when that happens.

On campus for at least the first year. It is such an important time to make friends and socialize. Would worry my kid would really miss out on a serious experience without that first year.
I never lived on campus and don't regret it. It just wasn't for me. That said - I never made any friends in college that I kept past the length of a class or 2. I also didn't start school for a year after high school and had a busy life working and outside of school.

I'd let my kid choose.
I think this is a huge part of it. I took a year off between HS and college too so I already had a core group of friends and a big social life outside of college. To me college was a means to an end. Something I had to do to make more money. I went to night classes only, so I think that was part of it too.
There are no schools in California that require students to live on campus or at home - unless it is a smaller private school. What if you are an older student?

I would prefer that my kids live on their own.
At my school (not in CA) you could get around it if you were married. The policy is that single freshmen must live on campus unless they live with a parent or guardian at a home that is within 30 miles of campus. I'm sure older students could apply for exceptions.
