My brother introduced me to the world of chatting around 1991-1992, can't remember exactly. We had computers at home starting around 4th grade so like 1984.
I guess I can blame my brother for my internet/chatting addiction. Ha. 1994 is when I had my own AOL account and would spend hours chatting in the AOL chat rooms. Sigh, miss those days. lol
I remember prodigy in middle school... one of my best friends had it.
The first time I used the "real" internet was around 1993... I remember dialing in, and using unix/Lynks (or whatever it was called) to "finger" people, and to look different university's "web pages" (this was pre-Netscape... so, they weren't really web pages!) One of my good friends was on a supercomputing competition team, and as part of it, they gave him a computer (with internet) to use at home.
I also distinctly remember the first time I used Google (not Yahoo, powered by Google). It was in my grad school advisor's office, year 2000-2001.
Haha, I love that so many nesties were big in the AOL chat room scene in the mid-90s. I also totally had the experience of people not believing I was 12 or 13 or whatever and my parents getting contacted to verify.
My first internet experience was when I was in 1993-4ish and my dad was helping my sister look for information on colleges on Compuserve (is that even how it's spelled??) Shortly afterwards we got AOL and I was hooked. After my sister started college I also chatted with her on some telnet forums. Ah, the olden days. I can't wait to tell my future children.

True story - DH and I are married today because of AOL. Ahhh, college days and late-night random IM'ing.
We both met and lived on the same floor our Sophomore year, then he transferred 6 hours away. We were just friends when we lived on the same floor. We lost touch when he transferred for about 1.5 years, then out of the blue one day, I see and IM from him. We started chatting online again, saw each other not long after, and the rest is history. I ended up moving to Chicago, where he is from, without knowing anyone but him 4 months after we started dating. I guess I took a leap of faith, but 8 years together (4 of them married), it seems to have worked out okay. We even kept some of our AOL conversations and put them in a Word doc that we still have. God bless the interwebs
I was 13, and it was in the summer between my 7th and 8th grade years. That would have been 1999. I had heard of AOL and most of my friends at school had it; my parents finally got it installed that summer, and I spent most of July and August IMing my friends haha. I remember being so excited when I signed on and it said, "You've got mail."
I started chatting on IRC junior year of high school, so 1992-93.
My 'nick' was Madisen there too and I hung out on #disney mainly. I wanted my nick to be Madison for the mermaid in Splash but Madison with an o was taken.
I'm FB friends with lots of people I chatted with back in high school. One of our friends was getting his phd in Artificial Intelligence from UCDavis and created gaming channels on IRC. I thought I was hot shit for knowing him and dropped his name all the time. lol
I got an email address my first fee weeks of college in 1995. But my school common computers did not have windows yet, so the email i accessed wasnt using a browser or anything resembling modern computing. By 1996 most of the computers were updated with Windows.
I remember working on a group project sometime in the fall of 1996 in the computer lab with two other girls and one suggested that we go on the Internet and asked for ideas of what to search for. The other suggested Mel Gibson. So we looked him up. That was my first real foray on the Internet. A fucking search for Mel fucking Gibson.
WOW. This is just bringing up some OLLLLLLLD memories.
I remember getting AOL in '95. Prior to that... ? I don't remember. I still have (and YES, I still use) my AOL email/screenname. The original chat rooms and game chat rooms (ZOMG, Slingo!) were just hours of entertainment! Dad works in I.T. and we've always had a computer and the internet just seemed like a logical step. I remember using Compuserve, ICQ, I didn'y use IRC until I met DH.
I think the 1st time I saw Google was in my library at school. The librarian was stoked about it
i don't remember the first time I used it but remember hearing that a friend was buying his plane tickets on the internet and I just could NOT comprehend how that worked out... it was my freshman year in college, so 1991-1992 time frame.
I had a computer and email set up in my apartment in 1993 b/c my dad is a computer geek and set me up so he could email me. I had like 2 other friends with email at that time.

In high school - I set up my first email address in 1997. My high school boyfriend and I set them up at the same time to be matching variations of Romeo and Juliet. I am so embarrassed for myself. This was however useful when in college I wanted to scam him into thinking I was someone else. A rouse that lasted a couple months and ended with him meeting this 'mystery girl' played by my roomate at a football game. We must have had a lot of free time. I also spent a lot of time chatting on ICQ.

1994 - my dad was a beta tester for Microsoft's Bob program so he hooked up internet access on our home computer so we could email bug reports. Most of my friends didn't have computers at that point (I was 10), so I was a popular choice for checking out things like disney.com.
