hahahahahahahahaha. SO TRUE. H and I were just talking last night, and he asked me if he thought it was a "deal breaker" if someone you were dating was a vegetarian and you were not (this happened to a co worker of his). And I said, NO, I could date a vegetarian, but not a vegan.
I will say my cousin is pretty good about not being a PITA even though she is a vegan. And I was pretty damn proud of myself for finding freaking VEGAN CUPCAKES for her baby shower.
I'm vegetarian and I even find it difficult to find common ground with my vegan sister. My love of cheese runs deep. She is not at all obnoxious about it but it's still tough. At home, we often cook vegan but when I see her it is usually on vacation and finding restaurants is tough.
I was vegan for a few years before it got super trendy. In the end I couldn't do it because I lost way too much weight and I was tired of being hungry. There is no such thing as vegan food in Switzerland. Restaurants, going to people's homes for dinner, etc... all impossible.
My old boss was vegitarian (except for tuna fish- whatever, lady) and brought it up ALL THE DAMN TIME. She'd go to lunch meeting late (always, always ran late) and interupt the discussion to announce that she was a vegitarian and there were no more vegitarian sandwiches left and if someone "who wasn't a vegitarian" still had a half sandwich left, would they switch it for another and give it to her. Ugh.
My friend's friend would just bring her own food over when they had BBQ's etc.-but she would always bring plenty for others to try if they wanted.
Her vegan chili was TO DIE FOR. She had regular shredded cheese and shredded soy cheese so people could pick what kind they wanted to put on their chili.
She also brought her own vegan cake to a birthday party-she didn't make a big deal out of it or give anyone else shit for not being a vegan-which is why I like her a lot. She's cool in many other ways as well!
My sister and her H are hardcore vegetarian...almost vegan, but they do dairy and eggs. They live with us, and it gets so difficult to find places to eat with them or even food to cook here. It drives me crazy at times! For instance, I brought home a cheese pizza, but they couldn't eat it because it has parmesan cheese in it. Being vegetarian is just not for me :/
Some cheese is okay but not all cheese? Why the parm hate?
Not all cheese is technically vegetarian. A lot of it is made with animal rennet. When I'm shopping for cheese at the store, I check labels. But if I'm at a restaurant, I just let it go and eat whatever.
ETA: there are plenty of parmesan cheeses that are not made with animal rennet, though.

My mom questioned me because I won't eat soups with animal stock. I think it just doesn't connect with her that even things that aren't actual animal flesh can still be not vegetarian.

That's awesome! My old boss used to make a huge deal out of being vegan, right down to yelling at people who were eating meat at lunch. She'd go on and on about "the poor animals." Meanwhile, she walked around with leather shoes and leather purses. Oh, and a leather jacket.
Hmm, the Guinness is the only one on that list that is new to me. But yep, no Caesar or Worcestishire for me, nor any of the MANY MANY things made with gelatin (even Frosted Mini Wheats, wtf.) Tons of Trader Joe's meals are made with cheese with animal rennet but they do have a parm made with vegetable rennet.
I'm not a vegan but I'm a fairly strict vegetarian.
