How do you know what camp you are in? It's not like a surgery that you get to schedule. (Or really shouldn't be)

I'm happy with whichever one best fits my medical situation at the time. I can see why some people would want to schedule C-sections -- it would be nice to know in advance when your baby is going to be born. But unfortunately, in the real world, anything can happen to ruin your plans, and you just kind of have to go with whatever makes the most sense at the time.

I'm vaginal all the way. Surgery of any type scares me. The idea of cutting into flesh just about makes me hyperventilate. Obv, if the baby's in distress, I won't care at all, but if things are normal, don't get near me with a scalpel.

That is such a sad statistic. Unless it's medically necessary I don't see why anybody would want to put their body through it.

I have had both three vaginal my last one being a c section. I am 100% vaginal. C section was emergency.

And FWIW, I will will want to avoid c-section like the plague but will obviously do whatever is medically necessary at the time.

Why shouldnt it be a scheduled surgery ?

I "know" because I have had doctors tell me that with my frame it is likely I would have complications with vaginal because I'm not wide enough and instead of risking my babies life I would like to ensure it has a safe birth

Obviously if you go into labour beforehand they still do a section "scheduled" just means that it your preferred delivery method

I am just saying for those people who just want a C section because they are either not wanting to damage their vagina or because they don't want to go through the pain of vaginal birth. I can't remember the exact term for those types.

Ummm healing from a vaginal birth is so much easier according to my mother. (She's experienced both kinds) That's just foolish to me; we were built to deliver that way, as creepy as it seems to me at times.

I obviously think autumn's situation is completely different. And delivering multiples for example, would be different as well.

I really, really wish we wouldn't judge each other about these choices. Women judge about everything - looks, weight, SAHM vs. working, daycare vs. nanny. I'd really like to see us here on this board remain supportive and not get into a divisive battle of ideologies.

Totally agree about the healing part. I am just saying some doctors allow woman to choose to have a C-Section because they want one. Not necessarily because they need one.

I'm seriously not judging! Just giving my honest opinion. I am sorta side eyeing the thought of someone thinking a c-section is an easier choice , but I'm not judging that choice.

Having done it both ways (DS1 was a vaginal delivery, DS2 was an emergency c-section), I MUCH preferred the vaginal delivery and will try for a VBAC if we are successful TTC#3.

Like Tarheels said, this shouldn't be something women judge each other for.

If a woman wants to choose a c-section for whatever reason why is that "bad"?

It might not be for the best reasons but isn't it still up to her to choose for herself?

People make lots of choices in life that aren't the one they need but that is everyone's right

Just because it's not the right choice for you doesn't make it the wrong choice for someone else

Well you started this conversation by not fully explaining your circumstances. You did not mention in your OP that you are are smaller frame and that your doctor recommended that you get a c-section. Then you added that it was possibly flameworthly. So yeah the first response/reaction from me is that you one of those people who get a c-section just because..not one that had a valid reason.

The thing is that a medical decision should be fully informed. A c section comes with higher risks to both mother and baby. That means responsible doctors should probably be discouraging them, not scheduling them to best fit schedules (both dr and mom's). The ultimate decision should be the mother's, but often it seems to get skewed by the doctor's desires... which can be out of line with recommendations from the ACOG. The idea that frame size is really relevant to whether you can birth a child vaginally has no scientific merit. Tiny little women push out babies every day.

Okay. Now you get ^o) from me . I am trying to have a civil discussion. I am not trying to judge you for your choices. Woman should be able to do what they want with their body. You started the conversation with a vague flameworthly post and seemed surprised that someone could have a different opinion than your own.

I think the thing that is "sad" about the number of c/s is that many doctors will push their patients into a c/s when it is not necessary. And that is sad, especially when the patient wanted a vaginal delivery.

I was in labor with L for 15 hours and ended up with a c/s for Failure To Progess and Fetal Distress. I don't feel that my c/s was unnecessary. But it does worry me that getting a vbac for number two is going to be an ordeal.

Also, my c/s recovery suuucked. I don't have a vaginal delivery to compare it with, and I know not everyone's experience is like mine. But, I didn't get to hold my son/nurse him for a couple hours. My incision hurt, and got infected a couple days after I was discharged. Nasty puss coming from my lower abdomen = not fun. I couldn't walk fully upright for like 3 weeks. Ugh. Don't want to do that again.

I only disclosed the reasons after you did jump on the chance to judge the decision and said it " really shouldn't be" an option

I think maybe the view point is that a patient shouldn't get to choose a c/s "just because" because when you think about other major surgery decisions, the decision is made at the reccomendation of a doctor. If a person said "I want to remove my appendix", a doctor is probably not going to perform that surgery unless there is a medical reason do to so.

I'm absolutely supportive of women making their own decisions about their body, but they should be made in conjunction with the advice of the doctor. The problem that people have is that they feel some doctors just perform c/s willy nilly without good cause.

In the event that I ever get pregnant, I hope to deliver vaginally. I don't want to put my body through major abdominal surgery, surgery recovery, and everything that comes w/ a c-sec unnecessarily.

RE small framed women and c/s-- My SIL is 5'3 and a size 2. She vaginally delivered a 10 lbs baby boy. She didn't need a c/s.

I'm going vaginal, and with drugs. I'm a wimp when it comes to pain lol. and like others have said, if I need it, emergency c-section

That said during my run today I can kinda see where you coming from with me judging those who get an elective c/s. The fact of the matter is I do. It seems like a very misinformed decision which I don't completely understand. Logically it does not make sense to me. However, a medically necessary decision to opt to get a c/s is completely understandable and logical.

Gynos can be full of shit when it comes to what is "too small". The pelvis changes shape during labour. It can't be predicted how much "stretch" your pelvis has until you actually try to birth a baby. Positioning of the baby also makes a huge difference.

I would ideally like to have a natural vaginal delivery. That being said as long as I go home from the hospital with a healthy baby I know in the end that's all that matters.
