I would really not like to live in Midtown. Most NYers don't even like to go to Midtown.
If I worked in Midtown I'd probably live in Astoria, Queens. It's a cute neighborhood, much more bang for your buck, and just across the river on train lines that run straight through Midtown in 15 mins. Some of the mentioned neighborhoods in Manhattan are nice too, but I'd hate paying such a high percentage of my income for such a small apartment.
I feel we would cook more than average and eat out a little bit less than most people, but I'm thinking $500 in groceries and $400 in eating out.
It is hard to know what you'll do eating out versus eating in until you get here, but I would expect much, much more than $400 a month for eating out and drinks.
Totally agree with v. My DH and I spend $400/month on breakfast/lunch alone. $10/day on lunch 5 days a week x 2 = $400. That doesn't even include breakfast (although we don't usually drink coffee and eat cereal or oatmeal at home).
Also, I live way downtown in FiDi and we pay 3600 for an 800 sq. ft apt with great views in a luxury building. You can definitely find 1 BRs lower than that, but smaller square footage.
In midtown, I paid 2900 for a studio 5 years ago in a doorman building. Don't move there.
While I don't agree with the OP's use of "ghetto", many many americans have a negative impression of Harlem and are unaware of its current state.
I think I have heard that there is a revitalization process going on, but back in the 80s Hollywood did a good job of creating a negative impression. (not related to race, just in comments made by all NYC-TV detectives) I dont think I would have said ghetto because I dont think I even know what that means. But I may have thought in the 80s that it was an area of high crime. I have friends that live in NYC now and due to new Hollywood stereotypes, I have come to believe it is nicer now.
Whenever I read these threads I always think "damn, I would love to live in NYC, even for just a few years".
Sigh... You are all so cool. Well, except for the OP. Lol.
LOL - When I read these threads on NYC, I can't imagine paying SO MUCH for such a tiny space!
Haha. But the city has SO much to do!! Why stay home? I love NYC and I have only been twice. I love hearing about all of the burroghs and cool places to live. My city is just boring!
