I don't miss the personal property tax. But I do remember the year I moved out of VA on Jan 1 and they charged me the whole year! They said it was based on where the car was garaged on Jan 1 and I tried to appeal with a signed lease in MD that started Jan 1. No dice. They don't mess around.
I really should look into it more, but when I compared my state tax return in MD to the year before I'm VA, it was about the same. I really don't feel like I'm taxed more in MD, but who knows. I probably am. I just like MD better for living (although I do miss a lot about VA. I was there for most of my adult life so far).
You do realize that registration is just another way to say car tax right? ;D
Not really. I pay a $40 registration fee in ADDITION to my car tax.
Yep, I have to pay a registration fee every year PLUS property taxes on my car. The registration renewal fee is the same for everyone, the car tax is based on the value of the vehicle.

DH works in VA 10 minutes from our house so I don't see us moving to MD any time soon. And my commute is only 20 most days. (It's DC, but the VA side of DC.)

At least in my town/state it is tied to the value of the car and the town mill rate. So while the car's assessed value decreases every year if your mill rate goes up (like our just did this year) our car taxes go up, too.

Even with the car tax, the overall tax burden in Virginia is relatively low to other states. I would rather pay a tax on personal property -- which gives me some degree of control based on what I chose to own -- and have low income and real estate taxes.
OP: the increased assessment does not sound right.
