My commute is about 8 miles each way into downtown, and I have tried the bike thing. It's... not so great. I reserve it for casual-Fridays-with-awesome-weather-only. If you have a casual office it works, and/or if your office has a place to change and maybe even shower. But if you have to be business casual or more formal and you have to show up looking that way (which I do) it is no bueno, as green as it may be.

I'm in a similar situation to you. 6.5 mile commute to downtown. $790 for a parking permit for the year or ride the bus for 45 minutes (bus pass is free though). I drive and am so glad I chose that. Much more flexible.
ETA: So to answer your question, convenience is worth $790/year to me
but i've never lived in a place where a bus is really a viable option. (it would take me almost 2 hours to go 20 miles, twice a day.) we just assume car/gas/parking is part of the deal and pay for it. i'm lucky that my employer pays for parking though. saves about $150/month.

Depends on the drive and the bus. If the bus shoots straight across town (not too many stomach churning turns) and isn't too crowded I'd rather relax and read a book or goof off on my phone than drive in rush hour traffic. On the other hand, if it's a twisty bus ride where I can't reliably get a seat for 3x as long vs a drive in light traffic on easy roads, I'd drive. I'd probably try each one before deciding.
If you don't have to be especially dressed up for work and there is a decent route, I'd probably bus one way and bike the other in dry weather.

Plus, being able to drive will also make it convenient when you have to run errands after work, like stopping at the grocery store or picking up dry cleaning.
If I didn't have a kid, I MIGHT consider the bus (I rode the bus for awhile when I didn't feel like walking a few years back). But w/ kids... no question, I'd drive.
