Which device(s) do you have? Nook Color, 1 year old
Why did you chose this one? Library book borrowing was the main reason I chose Nook over Kindle. I chose the color specific so I could browse the web and watch movies on it as well. Are you happy? Yes, very. Use it every day.
Pros: Many file types: Epub, PDF, Doc, etc., watch movies (mp4), listen to music (mp3 or streaming pandora), Web, email - Nest or mostly GBCN now.
Cons: Stupid speaker on the backside. If they would have fixed that on the Nook Tablet, I would have upgraded in a second. Internal storage - Tablet has more now. Most is reserved for B&N purchased titles I think, but I have a 16GB microSD card so no worries as of yet (and that's with 4 movies, 250+ ebooks both epub and pdf), music, pics, some P90X workouts and more) Nook friends is nice for lending but I think you can only lend a book once - not 100% on that but I seem to remember hearing about that as a complaint. No Windows Phone 7 app.
Main use(s) of the device for you personally? Reading - mostly PDFs
How is reading vs. web browsing on this device? I enjoy both - have never had any eye strain issues (I turn the brightness all the way down at night in the dark - or up about 1/3 of the way if reading at the beach in the sun)
Is lack of 3g a problem? No as long as I load books on before a trip. Some app/games warn you that you have x amount of times to play/open the game before you need to have internet connection (like Monopoly - I guess for updates)
Would you recommend this to a friend? I do quite often, although I rec the Nook Tablet. I got my mom one for her bday last year.
Which device(s) do you have? 3rd gen kindle Why did you chose this one? I have a SERIOUS dislike for B&N and when i got it borders was still open. I love amazon. That was part of it. Are you happy? LOVE IT! i use it mainly for travel. I still prefer paper books but its great when traveling. Pros/cons? Cons? none aside of it's not waterproof. Main use(s) of the device for you personally? Just reading and i've used it in places that didn't have computers or wifi (mine has 3g) like rural sicily to stay in touch via email. How is reading vs. web browsing on this device? the browsing is slow but in a pinch it's fine. Is lack of 3g a problem? I have the one with 3g. Would you recommend this to a friend? I have.
Which device(s) do you have? I have the Kindle Touch with ads. I honestly don't mind the ads I only wish they would advertise books instead of various web deals. I would much rather see recommendations of things to read and would probably be more likely to buy something from those ads.
Why did you chose this one? I originally wanted a Nook (and if the Nook glow would have been out for Christmas last year I probably would have gotten it) but after Borders closed I just didn't want to get something that might become obsolete and not be able to transfer my books to a new devise. I actually love B&N have their member card and everything and still buy books from them.
Are you happy? I'm very happy with my Kindle much more then I originally thought. I'm one of those hard core love owning books kind of people and was very against getting an ereader of any kind for a long time. But now that I have one I absolutely LOVE it. It is so easy to read and it doesn't hurt my eyes or give me headaches like the comp can. I also can read while holding my kiddos when they fall asleep on me or I'm nursing as I usually only have one hand free.
Main use(s) of the device for you personally? Reading. I tried out the web browsing but I have an IPhone and laptop that I would much rather use for that. I occasionally post things to FB from it but not often.
How is reading vs. web browsing on this device? The web browsing is pretty basic but for reading it is amazing. The eink is just like a book. Love it.
Is lack of 3g a problem? Nope. If I'm going on a trip I just make sure I have books ready to read on it and I never have a problem. Plus a lot of places have wifi, mcdonalds even, if I were ever traveling and needed to get a new book on it. Plus I can buy books from my phone and send them right to my kindle. Also there is a trick I found while borrowing a book form a friend if the wifi is turned off it can't take the book back after the 2 wks is up until you reconnect to wifi. I'm unsure if the other person still regains use of the book back on their Kindle as my friend wasn't reading it at the time but I had her book for over a month before I realized that I had to connect it to send it back.
Cons? The only thing that drives me nuts is the stupid Location thing instead of page numbers. It makes absolutely NO SENSE and I hate it. When reading I am always checking what page I'm on, I just have to. Up until High school I used to just memorize page numbers that I'm on in stead of using a bookmark and it's just a habit I can't break. I wish there was an option to display the page number rather than the Loc when it's available as I know a lot of ebooks don't have pages numbers (which is dumb since even simple word programs can do a page count). I was really hoping the latest update would have this option and yes I've written a few complaints to Amazon about this. Also and I know this is a publisher thing and not Amazon/B&N but I really hate spending the same amount on an ebook as I would to just buy an actual copy of the book. Sorry but there are no production/shipping costs as there are with an actual copy so there is no reason to price them the same. I usually will not spend more than $5 for the books on my Kindle and if it's something I must have I will go out and buy it if the price is the same. I would however spend more if they started selling books with an ebook download like DVDs come in Bluray/DVD/Digital download bundles. I honestly can't believe this isn't an option in this day and age.
Which device(s) do you have? Kindle Keyboard 3G Why did you chose this one? My husband bought it for me. Are you happy? Love it! Pros/cons? I love the e-ink. I'm not a fan of the backlighting on other devices. Main use(s) of the device for you personally? Reading. A couple of games. How is reading vs. web browsing on this device? I don't browse the web on this device. I use my iPhone for that if I need to. Is lack of 3g a problem? I have 3G, but whenever I am downloading, I'm at home where I have wireless. Would you recommend this to a friend? Absolutely!
Which device(s) do you have? Kindle keyboard with special offers, wi-fi only.
Why did you chose this one? It was a great deal at the time compared to the ones without special offers. I chose Kindle over Nook based on my visits to stores to play with each. I preferred Kindle. Also, at the time only Nook Color was out, not Kindle Fire. I considered the Nook for a moment but that type of screen is too harsh on my eyes. I prefer eink which doesn't strain my eyes one bit.
Are you happy? Love it and I've gotten some good deals with the ads!
Pros/cons? Only can read in .MOBI format but I am able to convert epubs and such so it's not a big deal, just an extra step.
Main use(s) of the device for you personally? Reading
How is reading vs. web browsing on this device? I don't browse the web on it. I bought it specifically for reading. The eink is so easy on the eyes.
Is lack of 3g a problem? Nope. I have no need for 3G. I have an iPhone so if there's any apps or book sI need I can use that to get it.
I have the old kindle 3G with the keyboard. Mostly because that was what the hot item was when I purchased a year ago. I went with kindle versus nook partially because I think amazon is a more stable company than barnes and noble, especially just looking at what has happened over the last few years with other B&M bookstores like Borders. And I use amazon for almost everything, so I figured I would stick with them. I love the eink, but I admit that I wish at times that I had color because I have some books with photos that don't appear well with e ink. Overall I do not regret the purchase and love it.
I have a Nook Color. Maybe two years old? I forget.
I don't use it as often because I prefer books to be honest. Internet browsing is relatively easy on the Nook. I don't like typing on it (don't like typing on an iPad either).
Why I bought a Nook? At the time, and until very recently actually, library books were only available on the Nook. I bought the color version for Internet access.
Would I get it again? Don't know. Like I said, I generally prefer books unless I'm reading something really light and mindless. I also worry a bit that Barnes and Noble will go the way of Borders and I'll be stuck with a worthless device. However...it will probably be obsolete before that happens.
Other cons: The fact that it is a color screen makes it very difficult to read in the sun.
FYI Nook Simple Touch has a new model out that has a backlight (Glow I think it's called)
Anyway, I LOVE my Simple Touch for a lot of reasons already mentioned on here. My mother and sister have the Kindle, and I just don't like using it as much as I do my Nook.
DH and I both have Kindle's. He has the first gen and I have the second, so we've had them for a few years. He's the perfect case for the Kindle - travels all the time for work, reads really fast and all the time, so with the Kindle, he didn't have to carry multiple books on a business trip. He bought me one a year later (I commute by public transportation). We've both since bought iPad's, so I use the Kindle app for the iPad when I commute now. I still use the Kindle to read at home, though (I like that it's not backlit). We don't browse the web on the Kindle's, but we don't have to. The only purpose for us is to read (and share) books. I recommend it to everyone I know
I have (and love) a Kindle and my FI has a Kindle Fire. To be honest, though, I love all e-readers since they get people to read. At first I was actually against them, preferring the feel and familiarity of paper books, but now I just adore the convenience of being able to have hundreds of books at your fingertips. Especially on trips.
I don't have one yet, but I'm pretty much settled on the Nook Simple Touch with the glow light feature. We already have an iPad, so I pretty much just want my e-reader for reading purposes. I think the e-ink is the best for that, but I like the fact that the new Nooks have the backlighting for night reading.
Now I just need to come up with an occasion so I can buy it for myself!

Hi! I am a lurker/newb here, but I was wondering if someone could answer 2 questions for me on the Kindle Touch.
1) Has anyone used the translate option? I studied German for many years and would like to read some books in German to try to re-gain some of my knowledge. Just wondering how you like it. It'd obviously make it much easier to look up a word by touching the screen versus consulting a separate dictionary.
2) Not only Kindle Touch related, but Special offers - is it worth it to save the $ and get the version with the special offers? Do you find it annoying at all?
I am specifically considering Kindle Touch 3G with special offers for $149.

I don't have special offers but I can imagine I would rather not have ads on my kindle. I think it would feel a little like an invasion of privacy, NWIM?

I have the Kindle Touch with ads and I don't have a problem with it at all. They are hardly noticable really since its all black and white and they have started putting more book ads on it lately so I kind of like looking at those when it's on 'sleep mode'. You can always pay the extra money even after buying a Kindle with ads to disable them later so I would just save the money and see if they bug you first.

My husband and I both have the Nook Tablet and we love them. It made sense for us because we go to Barnes & Noble all the time, have memberships there and have accounts set up with them online. It's where we bought all our regular books, so getting their Nook made sense.
I use mine strictly for reading. I think I've surfed the Internet with it a few times in-store, but I wanted a device really just for reading. I was very anti-e-readers for the longest time because I love my books. But it is just so convenient and saves me so much space and money buying books this way. I definitely have converted to the Nook Tablet.
My husband did have a Nook Color prior to the Tablet and said it would sometimes freeze up on him and occasionally take a long time to shut down or start up. We've experienced neither of these issues with the Tablet. We can also share books since we are Nook 'friends." And I like that for an hour in-store at B&N you can read anything you want for free on your Nook.
Mine isn't on the list. I have the 1st generation Nook with wifi+3g. I love having the 3g so I doubt I will ever "upgrade." I don't want backlit, because I wouldn't use the tablet functions, and love it. I also like that it's not touch screen. Makes it harder to accidentally turn the page.
I have a Nook tablet. I started out with the first generation Nook a couple of years ago. It was a gift from my DH. I have several friends with Nooks so we all share books. I got the Nook tablet earlier this year so that I could browse the web and download apps, but I use it mostly for reading. When I got my tablet, I gave my daughter my old Nook and we shared books, but Santa brought her a Nook tablet for Christmas this year and and she played games on it all night. The lack of 3G doesn't bother me at all. We have wifi, so I download most of my books at home, but like PP said, there are enough places with wifi that I can download or browse the web almost anywhere. I would absolutely recommend it to a friend.
Which device(s) do you have? Nook Simple Touch (w/o Glowlight, it's a year older than the Glow) Why did you chose this one? I'm an avid reader and got sick of lugging around wicked heavy books. I chose the Simple Touch over much fancier color screen and web-browsing ones because I already own a smartphone and a laptop. I really just wanted something light to carry around and read from, didn't need all the extra jazz. Are you happy? Yes! The battery is incredible because of the E-ink and it charges quickly too. That was a huge factor for me. Pros/cons? Pros: Easy to use, light, LONG battery, reliable. Cons: Can't zoom in or out of pages when you need to view maps =/ Main use(s) of the device for you personally? Just reading. How is reading vs. web browsing on this device? N/A Is lack of 3g a problem? Not at all. Would you recommend this to a friend? Only friends who feel like they don't want a tablet-like experience.
Maybe this thread can distill a lot of information into one place for easy reference in the future.

I have a Kindle Touch. I wanted a device with eink and wanted to use it for reading only. I am very happy with my choice. Love how lightweight it is. My Kindle Touch is very portable and the battery lasts a long time. Lack of 3G has not been an issue for me. I always have plenty of books ready to be read on my Kindle. I would definitely recommend it to a friend.

I just upgraded from the Nook Color to a Nook HD. It's awesome!
My favorite feature is that I can create up to 6 different profiles on it. DD1 now has her own account where only her books and apps show up. Web browsing and accessing the Nook store are also disabled so I no longer have to worry about her buying something by accident.
I can access Hulu Plus and can also either rent or buy movies and TV episodes.
The battery life has been great so far, too. I swear that the battery on my Nook Color was always dead by the time DD1 was done with it.

Which device(s) do you have? -- 2nd Generation Kindle, 3G
Why did you chose this one? -- I did not choose it. It was a gift from my boss when I left the firm to move to Australia.
Are you happy? -- I am very happy with it, though I still read more physical books than I do e-books.
Pros/cons? -- The biggest pro is obviously the ability to carry many books at one time. The biggest con to me is it doesn't feel like a book to me; it feels like a little computer, though the e-ink is much more book-like than my husband's iPad.
Main use(s) of the device for you personally? -- I use mine mainly for reading, and usually free or cheap books that I would have never found in a bookstore.
How is reading vs. web browsing on this device? -- I use it mainly for reading, only using the web-browsing feature when I need to look something up and the Kindle is my only connection to the internet.
Is lack of 3g a problem? -- I have a 3G enabled device.
Would you recommend this to a friend? -- Yes. I prefer to have a physical keyboard and buttons to a touch screen, as most of the time I have problems getting the touchscreen to recognize my touches. And I prefer my reading devices be reading devices. I really don't care for all-in-one devices, I prefer to read without distraction and too many functions mean more distractions. If I were buying a kindle for a friend, I would definitely look for the current model closest to mine.

Which device(s) do you have? I've had a Kindle Touch for 1.5 years.
Why did you chose this one? I wanted a dedicated ereader Kindle and this was the newest version.
Are you happy? Yes, but I think I'd be happy with just about any of the dedicated ereaders.
Pros/cons? Pro: It's a good size that can fit all my regular bags. Con: No built in light. I broke the light on the $50 case with built-in reading light and I'm too cheap to get another. I would love to upgrade to the Kindle paperwhite, but I think it's wasteful to get rid of things while they are still usable. I would like the ereader to be little lighter.
Main use(s) of the device for you personally? Reading and word and number games.
How is reading vs. web browsing on this device? I only use the experimental browser to go to the library site.
Is lack of 3g a problem? No. I plan out my book order and always have backup available.

I have a Kindle Fire - got it for Christmas 2011, so a year and a few months ago. I love, love, loved it up until this week when it started refusing to open the web browser. It will do everything else, but no web. It has also gotten really finicky with charging. The cord has to be placed just perfectly for it to register and charge the battery.
I know that's what you get with cheap electronics, but I hate throwing it away and buying a new one.
Maybe this thread can distill a lot of information into one place for easy reference in the future.

I have the Kindle Keyboard. It was given to me as a gift from my older sister. I didn't actually want a Kindle and don't use it much at all. My husband uses it more than I do actually.
Pros are the e-ink screen and the portability of so many books at once. The ease of carrying something small/light that contains an entire series or really large/thick books. Can read faster just by pressing a button, rather than turning the page.
Cons are it is not a paper book, which I prefer, and I just feel like the screen is so small. Maybe on the new Kindle Touches it isn't an issue. The whole device is the size of a mass market paperback, which makes the screen even smaller than that. I feel like I'm clicking more than I was page turning. Also, it does that black screen/flash thing when you turn a page. Again, newer versions may not? Also, you can lend books, but if you don't like them you can't give them away or donate them. You have to click click click through them to choose what to read.
I dislike web browsing on it. It's for reading purposes only. It's the Wifi model, if I had purchased it I would have probably chosen 3G, though so far I don't need it. I have access to Wifi almost everywhere I go and I always load two or three books at a time anyway.
I would only recommend this to a friend who really doesn't care how they physically read a book, whether it is paper or e-ink. Or someone who doesn't like looking at all their books on their shelves to choose what to read next.
I have the 2nd generation kindle keyboard because that was what was available then, that an one of the early model Nooks and I liked the feel of the kindle better. It works great for me and I really don't feel any need to upgrade to one of the newer ones. I am curious though, can you move your library over if you get a new one?
I have no idea if this was answered or not, and I know it's over a year later, but yes, you can. My sister upgraded to a touch from the keyboard and just used the same account and redownloaded the books to her new Kindle.
I have a Kindle paperwhite. DH got me a gen2 Kindle right after C was born and it made reading so much easier for me. Then when it had a major computer glitch last summer after 2yrs of hard use, I upgraded to the paperwhite. Love the backlit screen so I can read in dim places as well as sunlight. And the e-ink is easy on my eyes after a day on the computer. Also fantastic for flying without packing tons of books, especially since you can now keep small electronics on for the entire flight, as long as it's in airplane mode. Since the first one barely lasted 2 years, I'm a bit wary about how long this one will last, but I can't see myself giving it up. ETA: it's easy enough to plan ahead and download the books I want/need around wifi that I don't need the 3G.
C has a Kindle Fire with the Kindle Free Time in place. I've thought about getting a magazine on there, since the black and white options are limited. It's low cost enough that if he breaks it, it's not the end of the world for us. Since we wait in the car 20-25min every day picking up DH, it also is an entertainment option; the not yet 4yr old kid is better at Angry Birds than both of us. ETA: web browsing is okay, still prefer a laptop over this or my DH's Samsung tablet.
