1. This isn't really how I vacation at all, so it's never come up.
2. The one time H&I did stay somewhere that had a full kitchen, we only used it consistently for breakfast and happy hours. Maybe a lunch or two over the course of 10 days. All our dinners were out. I can always cook at home. I was far more interested in trying the local cuisine.

MIL rents a house for friends and us once a year. She won't take money, so we do all the buying of food, and I do the cooking. We eat in most nights. I like to cook, though, especially when I have the time to do it well and more people around to appreciate it.
On a side note, I do not understand going back to the same place year after year either the way some people do. There are so many awesome places in the world to see, and I'm going to see as much of them as possible.
This is an easy annual trip that we do. It's pretty cheap for us b/c we don't pay for the housing, just contribute food and liquor wise.

We always have a kitchen where we stay because of food allergies. It would throw me into a panic if I had to rely on restaurants for three meals a day for several days.
We do try to eat out once or twice though. But only after a crap ton of research on the restaurants.
we're eat out every night people. we might have some simple breakfast foods, sandwich materials, or snacks for the kitchen, but when we're on vacation somewhere, we never cook dinner.
but we also don't do big family vacations. that sounds like one of dante's circles of hell to me. it's always just us (or us plus one other couple).
On a side note, I do not understand going back to the same place year after year either the way some people do. There are so many awesome places in the world to see, and I'm going to see as much of them as possible.
part of it is $$. It's a relatively inexpensive trip. But DH and I always try to use our other vacation to go somewhere and do something else entirely different.
A couple of the people who go on our trip- that is all they do. Either JUST that trip, or similar trips every year. To that degree, I TOTALLY hear you. While I love OBX and the trip, at the same time, there is more out there that I want to see and do!
Yeah I can see if there is a close by weekend away type thing that you enjoy. But I totally know people who only go to the exact same place every year, and don't consider going anywhere else. That is what I find weird.

When I was very young, my mom always wanted a kitchen when we traveled so she could cook for me since I was a picky eater. After I entered my teen years, there was no need for that. Both she and I have the same sentiment, 'I'm on vacation, so I'm not cooking.' I've never personally stayed anywhere on vacation with a kitchen (except when very young) and have no desire. If we ever did, I'd likely do the same as some of the other posters in having breakfast and/or lunch there, but not dinner. I don't want to be doing all of that work. Plus, what if you don't finish all of the groceries that you buy. You'll have to either throw it away or find a way to transport it home. That's just a hassle.

We have a vacation house & spend a lot of time there, both with our kids, & occasionally with my sister + her kids, etc. We cook most of the meals when we are there for several reasons - 1) it's in a tiny coastal town, so restaurant options are limited 2) I don't enjoy eating out with my kids on a regular basis (they have a short attention span) 3) we go all the time, so it would be expensive.
Since it's our place, it has a stocked freezer & pantry. We bring whatever fresh stuff we need. We do a larger family trip 1x/year, and plan out a rough menu, split the cost of the groceries, & everyone pitches in. The idea of vacationing with a bunch of families isn't appealing to me.

When we have a full (or semi full) kitchen available, we have breakfast & lunch in the hotel/house. Then we go out for dinner. It's worked well for us so far (though, we haven't traveled with DD yet).
Last year 8 of us rented a house in Charleston. We ate out most meals, but had one day at the house where we grilled. We assigned food before the trip, and everyone chipped in with cleaning. Worked out quite well.
We are going to OBX on Friday and we are planning on eating most meals in. We are rotating who cooks dinner. Since DH and I have the most available room in our car, we are bringing the basics with us so that we can save $$. No point in buying stuff that we have as staples at home. So in order to know what staples to bring versus what we need to buy at the store, I had my sister, mom and grandma help me compile the food list for the week. For things that we had, I added it to my master list of things to bring. If we don't have it or needs refrigeration, I added it to the master grocery store list. Yes, it's over the top and majorly OCD, but it will save us money and I don't mind doing it.
99% of the time when we travel, DH and I stay in hotels. The one time we rented a house for a week with friends, we just hired a chef as well. It was awesome - the chef cooked breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the entire week and did all the grocery shopping for us. He also doubled as a bartender.
