DH just showed me this article. Apparently the grandpa thought it would be funny to send that picture to the dad. I don't know if it is my current state, but I would NOT have laughed and would have deemed them to immature to watch my baby again. :::clutches pearls:::
Well, guess this is just more proof I'm going to be a horrible mom. I would think that was hilarious. I also thought the knife against the parasailing rope pic was a riot.

no, it probably just means you're not neurotic/anxious like me. I see it and think, omg, omg, what if...i know.

Sometimes I think I'm broken, because this doesn't really bother me. It's obviously a joke. But I'm also not a parent. But then again, there are sickos in this world who have for real put babies in ovens/micowaves, and that makes it significantly less funny.
I guess my question is... What's the real harm? The oven isn't on... There's no weird way the oven could accidentally turn on, the door shut by itself and the baby get locked in there. There's no potential harm in taking this pic.

While I can see the humor in the idea behind the picture, this was the FIRST TIME these brand new parents left their baby with Grandpa. WTF was he thinking? This is not the way to ease their minds about leaving their baby with him.
Obviously he wasn't going to hurt the baby, but holy shitty judgement. And THAT is what would worry me.

I think my problem is I can't help but picture what would happen if the oven were on.

I don't see the harm, and I would laugh if my dad/FIL/H sent me this picture of my child. Clearly it is a joke, and the kid is being completely supervised. So long as the child wasn't left alone it doesn't strike me as a problem. People overreact so easily.
I can't get worked up about this. I am pretty sure Grandpa didn't turn on the oven, and I'm sure he took that baby right out as soon as the picture was snapped.
It looks like Grandpa even put a blanket in the pan before putting baby down. How considerate ;-)
I dunno. It's not hilarious but it doesn't bother me.
While I can see the humor in the idea behind the picture (the pan...not the actual oven part), this was the FIRST TIME these brand new parents left their baby with Grandpa. WTF was he thinking? This is not the way to prove to them that they can feel good about leaving their baby with him.

My take is that he did it because it was the first time they left the baby and were so nervous about it, kind of making fun of them (with love) for their anxiety and thinking it would be hilarious. Did it say the parents were upset about it? Or did other people who saw the pic get upset and kind of run with it?

Because this was the very first time they'd left their brand new baby with him (or anyone, it appears). It might have been funny if they had already left the baby with him and didnt have all those "OMG, we've never been away from this tiny, helpless creature" feelings that almost all parents of newborns (esp. first borns) have.
The shitty judgment was that grandpa didnt take into account that they were still developing that trust with him where he was proving to them that he was a capable, level headed caretaker.

Yes, the parents were upset about it. The way to ease a nervous parents mind isnt to make fun of them by using their baby to play on their fears.

Yep, I thought it was funny. Shit.
I mean, I get where the grandparents are coming from. The dad was anxious about leaving the baby with his dad, and I'm sure they were like "Really? We managed to keep you alive all those years. I think we can figure out how to watch the grandkid." Then decided to tease the dad a little.
"It's like, dude, if you're sitting there gearing up to flog the dolphin for internet strangers, perhaps you might not be in the best position to cast judgment." - underwaterrhymes
