Basically, the average number of texts sent per month fell for the first time in U.S. history. (ETA: This is thought to be due to other modes of messaging allowing customers to avoid texting charges.)
I wasn't excessively surprised by the fact that text messaging fell.
However, I was MAJORLY surprised by this sentence:
U.S. cell phone customers sent an average of about 675 messages per month in the third quarter, down from around 700 per month in the prior quarter.
675 texts per month??? SENT?
I sent 29 in October. Just counted one by one on my phone.
Apparently I'm a loser.
ETA: I think I should also add that, when my husband and I met 5 years ago, he didn't even have text messaging yet. Yep, you read that right. I loved it, actually. It forced us to talk on the phone. We hardly ever text, even now. He probably sends about what I do.
Text messages might fall because of iMessaging, right? I am pretty sure that every person I "text" has an iPhone so unless there is some issue with the iMessage going through (which was happening a lot in the past few months), my "texts" are iMessages. I also send a lot of emails from my phone.
This month I sent 134 texts (real texts) because of the storm -- iMessaging didn't work at all. From June through October, I was consistently between 60-70 texts. My husband is on a share plan with me and he sends around 130 a month (more of his friends have non-iPhones, so they are sent real texts).
I use an average of 20 minutes of voice a month, and my husband uses 10. We really make the most of our unlimited voice and texting!

probably about 500/month. but this is primarily for work. text messaging is the primary form of communication between attendings and residents at the hospital that i am a faculty at. i get texts all day long from residents.

I don't think 675 texts/month is excessive. Assuming the month has 30 days, it works out to 22.5 texts per day. That's probably one or two short conversations.

I use about the same . I avoid making phone calls unless absolutely necessary. I prefer emails...even tell my clients that I answer emails faster lol. Luckily a lot of them are overseas and don't want to call anyways. Text is disabled on my phone so the only thing I use my $120/mo phone (2 lines) for is about 1gb of the unlimited data. H streams music off slacker radio so we get our money worth haha.
Not at all. We tend to send texts after every sentence so it's multiple texts. So rather than grouping the message in one text, it'll be like 4 texts at once. Makes sense?
Yeah, I guess I didn't include in my count texts that may have automatically split after 160. So maybe 29 becomes, like, 35.
Still. lol.
If you divide yours by 4 you still only get down to 1200/month!
I have no idea, most of mine are sent via iMessage so they don't show up on my cell phone bill.
Same here. Almost everyone we know has an iPhone, so I have no idea. I send a LOT, though.
Same here too. My sister and I basically text each other every thought that pops into our heads; I have no idea how many we send. And one of my two BFFs isn't far behind. My other BFF doesn't have an iPhone but I use the textfree app to text with her. It's kind of a pain to use but she doesn't text that much.
Thanks to a few friends (y'all know who you are, lol) I typically wake up to around 40 each morning, lol. Those are all iMessages though so don't "count".
Probably a couple hundred real texts (DH has an Android).

We have unlimited Texting, but I only use about 500 a month.
I really prefer texting while I am at work when it is family or personal stuff, so people are not listening to my conversations. I text my daughters and DH a lot.
Maybe ten? I hate texting. I was out of college when it became big, and I never learned how to type quickly with my thumbs. I only use it if I'm meeting up with someone, if if it's my friend that doesn't work a desk job. Otherwise I'm all email for my communications.
I was never the kind of person to spend all night talking on the phone with someone, so maybe it's the same personality trait? I'm introverted so I just can't fathom communicating with someone that much. My job is very interactive, so all I want to do when I get home is shut off from the rest of the world.
