I wear flats to work most days. Now that I'm taking the train instead of the bus, I have a little farther to work. Yesterday I wore some Toms ballet flats. It seems that all my flats are generally comfortable enough for walking around the office and across the street for coffee but not the several blocks involved at each segment of my commute.
I do have a pair of Clarks maryjanes, but a) they require socks, which look stupid with a skirt, and b) one of the buttons keeps breaking. I don't need the most fashionable things ever, but I just need SOMETHING that I can wear with skirts and won't give me blisters or kill my feet. But I'd rather not do running shoes if I can help it.
Honestly? IN the winter I wore Uggs, they were warm and I just wore them with skirts. No one cares. IN the summer, I was okay with flip flops or flats, but I am not sure what another summer option might be. I think you should just join the DC fashion crowd and weat sneakers
I'm totally with you on the no skirts and tennis shoes. I will wear tennis shoes when I wear pants.
I'll usually just wear flats if I'm wearing a skirt. Why would you need socks for your MJs? Don't you wear sweater tights or something when you wear a skirt during the winter?
I will wear Ugg type boots with a skirt if it's too chilly to wear flats.
Yeah, I wear Merrells while walking to the office, and then once I get there, change into my variety of shoes that I keep there. I have like 4-5 pairs of shoes at the office.
A few years ago I had a mile walk to the metro from my apartment and then a half mile from the metro to work. Then I moved and lived just under 2.5 miles from work and I walked. (Obviously both uphill in the snow!). I wore sneakers, ugly as it was. I tried to pretend I was more hip by wearing pumas or chucks, but really, comfort won out over looking good.

With this particular pair, I get blisters if I don't. And the insoles stick to my feet and start coming out. It's weird.

I wear tights (but not sweater tights because they don't make them for fat girls), but it's honestly not been cold enough for tights much lately.
I realize today is unseasonably warm, but my definition of tights weather is a little colder than most people here.
Today I'm wearing a dress, cardigan, and flats. Except the flats just aren't that comfortable.
I think it's going to be quite a while before I find it cold enough to wear my boots. In fact, I'm pretty sure my boots are still in Wisconsin. Basically I need flats that aren't hideous but have more support than what I have.

I find Chucks horribly uncomfortable. No arch support.
WHY DO MY FEET SUCK SO MUCH?!
I need a rascal.
I fully expect to be the youngest person at the podiatrist later this week.

This. When I had to walk about 2 miles to work, I started wearing sneakers. It looked ridic but I could walk faster and was WAY more comfortable.
For those of you saying, "I wore XYZ," can you show me an example? I have the concept of changing shoes at work down. I just don't really have anything to wear for the commute right now.
Have you looked into Privo by Clark? Not the most fashionable, but they're comfy and practical without being a sneaker. The shoe sites (Zappos, etc.) seem to have more models than are available on the Clarks site itself.
Yeah. I tried a couple of pairs on in NYC (on the ill-fated trip where I fucked up my foot), but none of them were quite right. Maybe I just didn't get the right pair? Gah. I think I need to go shoe shopping. KILL ME NOW.
A few things I'd share: My personal preference is something that is as comfortable as a sneaker but doesn't look like the 80's "working girl" huge sneakers with professional clothes.
Great options are nice "ballet-style" flats that are designed to be more comfortable (so, more cushion or structure that make a longer walk more comfortable), or some of the "sneaker" styles (like Sketchers does) that are black / low profile and wouldn't look ridiculous if one was wearing a skirt or dress pants.
My pet peeve is chunky running sneakers and / or flip flops while people are commuting in their professional gear!!
During the summer, I wear Havaianas flip flops a lot
I also wear ballet flats/moccasins/loafers/Toms year-round either when it isn't cold or rainy (or when I'm wearing pants)
If it is cold and I'm wearing a dress, I usually wear boots (my pairs are from Frye -- Melissa button and Paige)
If it is rainy, I wear rain boots
If it is really cold, I wear Uggs.
I have footpetals in a lot of these shoes and am fine commuting. Between commuting and grabbing lunch, I walk about 2 miles in these shoes as part of my daily commute (and I tend to walk more than that on weekend days).
I don't commute but I recently got Skechers Go Walk shoes that are super comfy. I wore them all over Disney and they were great. They are a little fug but better than a sneaker with skirts, I think and I don't wear socks. They come in a ton of colors.
In the spring/summer, I wear regular Toms, flip flops, or converse sneakers (though I always feel like Ellen Degeneres when I wear the sneakers).
In the fall/winter, I wear Minnetonka moccasins or running shoes if it's wet outside (but only with pants. I hate it, but I walk A LOT), rain boots, and I try to wear a lot of skirts/dresses so I can wear my tall boots.

In the winter, I have a pair of short leather Merrell boots I bought several years ago that are slim and professional looking. In the summer, like V, I wear Havianas. In the fall/spring, I wear Vera Wang Lavendar or Cole Haan flats.
Ok, I was looking for the Vera Wang Lavendar flats--Lillian--and it looks like they have been discontinued. Lucky makes a similar looking flat, but I can't swear to comfort.
Fwiw, I've purchased most of my Cole Haan flats from Nordstrom Rack and Rue La La. Sale prices are out there. And I'll never go back to cheap flats. The difference is amazing.
dutch, those CH look promising. I tried some on before, but they didn't have that elastic top. They were more structured, and they rubbed badly. I oculd tell within 60 seconds that I was going to wind up with terrible blisters.
Sadly, low, slim boots would probably look horredous on my cankles. The only boots I have are snow boots, and it's probably going to stay that way until I slim down.
My flats are for standing all day. For walking, they are good too. When snow or really cold arrives, then I wear snow boots and change.
I like Aerosoles, FrancoSartos, Hushpuppies. When I go shoe shopping, before I try them on, I press the insole to see how much support and squish/biunce there is.

AH, I will say that some of my various Cole Haan flats took a few wears to wear in and avoid rubbing across the top of my foot, but it depends on the style.
I've never needed special transit shoes, and we take the trains or walk basically everywhere. I just wear what I'm wearing that day (summer flip flops or flats and winter flats or riding boots).
