my immediate neighborhood (like, the surrounding 4-5 streets) is predominantly white. my overall area is racially mixed. my city is racially mixed.
the real lack of "diversity" in my social circle is socioeconomic diversity. i live, work with, and socialize with mostly white collar professional types.

We live near a lot of Italian family owned businesses, and a major university so we get a mix in the student population. Our neighbors are mostly black and white.
My neighborhood is fairly mixed with white, Chinese, Russian, Indian with a few Latino tossed in for good measure and one African-American (from Ghana) married to a Mexican-American (adopted as a child from Mexico along with her twin by a missionary couple from Bremerton).
From our house (on the corner) we have White, Chinese, Russian (replaced a Chinese family), White, African (from Ghana) married to Hispanic (Mexican native adopted by a missionary couple from WA as a child), Filipino, White (replaced a Chinese family) - and around the cul-de-sac are White, Russian, White, White, White (replaced black family), White (most annoying neighbors ever), Indian, Indian, Chinese, White, Indian, Hispanic, White, White, Chinese (divorced from Hispanic; her children are tri-lingual in Chinese since grandma lives with them and doesn't speak English, Spanish from dad's family and English), Chinese, White (replaced a Chinese family - whose son happened to go to high school with my DH across the country in Maryland. Small world!)
Switzerland is suprisingly multi cultural. Our building is a mix of Swiss (German and French speaking), Portuguese, Kosovonian, Argentine and me...the American.
My neighborhood is trying to win a diversity contest.
To the left: couple in their 50's w/ adult son living at home. White. They foster dogs and she is an alcoholics anonymous leader.
To the right: couple in late 30's/early 40's with 3 kids and a rare breed dog. AA, he is first-generation and she has local roots since the great migration. They work split shifts.
Across the street: Mormon couple with 1 adult son and 2 teens, one of whom is deaf and the other of whom has some sort of learning disability. White. I think the dad works in the LDS church, but I'm not sure. He has family roots here but she is from Hawaii.
At the corner: two cop brothers who are very white, very Chicago Irish, and the sons of the developer who built the neighborhood. Down the street: several Mexican families, a little old white lady, a Russian orthodox nun, a family of orthodox Jews with what I think are Israeli accents, a Korean family, and two old gay men, one of whom is Australian.
There are a couple of first generation polish immigrants and more mexican families on the next street, a ton of old white people, a couple of muslim families, one family with kids who seem a few years ahead of H and I, a mixed-race Jamaican family, and a guy I've never seen who has a radio tower in his yard and boards the windows. There's also a couple who got 6 show dogs when their kids went away to college and an artist of some sort, who I've never met. He lives in a house where a pedophile committed suicide about 5 years ago.
I think we need a Brazilian family to round things out, maybe.
I want to watch Boondocks Saints now.
This makes no sense to me, and I live in Boston and have seen the movie.
the city i live in is predominantly chinese, indian and white.
the big city i work and live outside of is a pretty even mix of everything (shut up miso!). italian, eastern euro, arabic, chinese, indian, caribbean, canadian-white, japanese, etc etc
haven't you heard? white people only care about ethnic diversity vis a vis food. slap two indian restaurants in a town and people are all "omigah, it's SO DIVERSE around here!"

I kinda love the idea of my living in a neighborhood, and a girl across the street lists me on a message board as an example of how diverse her neighborhood is.
Meanwhile, the whole town could still be 98% white.

Not that diverse, actually. Two major ethnic groups, a little bit of everything else.
