I think the 5 judgments are harsh, too! When I think of an "average" looking woman, I think of someone much more...average, I guess. If I saw some of those women IRL, I'd probably think they were quite pretty.
Maybe this is an indication of where I live? Average in the Midwest is probably different than average in NYC or Southern California. Or maybe I just find people more attractive in general than others. Or maaaaybe I'm elevating the scale in my mind in the hopes that no one would think I'm a 3!

This is true. It sounds completely weird, but there are (generally) more attractive women in Louisiana than there were in Michigan. You can throw a stone where I work & hit 3 girls who are pretty enough for TV.
I've noticed this anytime I'm in the South - I don't know if women in general just take more care with their appearance? Or are they genuinely more attractive? I also feel like the nicer the climate, the more attractive the people. Maybe if I move south I'll get hotter?

It worked for me! In Michigan, I was invisible. In Louisiana, I got hit on everywhere I went.
I look back now, and I think thinness was more valued than facial beauty in MI. The most popular girls were kinda plain-faced like the #5 I posted, but they were thin.

I do think it is a regional thing. I know this is going to sound bad....
SIL moved to Oklahoma. When she talks about a hot guy, we always ask her if he's "Oklahoma hot" or "California hot."
There are a lot of gorgeous women here, but a LOT of really unattractive ones too. I think it is because there are a lot of actual and aspiring models and actresses and such, and a lot of women who date/marry wealthy men (who would only date/marry very attractive girls). And there's a lot of money in some areas, and a lot of superficialness, so spending a lot of time and money on clothes/hair/fitness/spa treatments/juice cleanses is very normal in some circles.
But again, there are a ton of unattractive people here too.
If you dressed every woman up like a celebrity, did her make-up, and took fashion shots.... she would look amazing. Half of our perception beauty is in the contexts we see celebrities in.
I totally agree with this. So many of the "perfect" pictures we see are, as someone said, enhanced/ touched up, etc. Heck- 1/2 the time it's the lighting that they are standing in too! Photo shoots = perfect lighting.
I was not expecting so many women to be posted in here. I automatically thought men.
Same.
And now I am starting to wonder if I would rank even lower than average. I will make myself feel better by telling myself that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
