1) The parents obviously knew they were coming home and delay telling the kids in order to surprise them. I feel like it is mean to withhold that information any longer than necessary. That is days the kid could have not been worried about their parent and to delay it just to surprise them is unkind.
2) Agreed about it being a private moment that doesn't need to be taped or done in front of their entire class
3) I keep seeing these on the news and I don't get why they are newsworthy. Sure, they are sweet, but they aren't news.

There was one on HLN today where the kid had ms or something, and learned to walk while his dad was in Afghanistan, but kept it a secret for the homecoming and walked to his dad.
I was in the military, and that one still made me cry like a fucking baby.
