when we moved to chi-town it was past time for me to buy new furniture for my house. dh and i were just under 2 years married together, so it was a good time to set up "our" house. we invested in nice EA sofa/recliner for the living room and a new bed and night stands for the master. no regrets whatsoever. i don't know if PB sale items count as an investment (mixed reviews usually here), but our living room end tables/coffee table set were on sale at PB, too. they have actually lasted very well with everything our toddler son tosses (or bangs, or tries to scratch) at them.
otherwise our family room has a super duper sale sectional from zgallerie that is 6 years old, but we are considering changing (not b/c of it, but b/c of our needs and the space with kids). it also has mixed end tables from the old bombay furniture store, and leather storage cubes and media center from world market that are awesome.
our other master bedrooom furniture is a tall/skinny chest of drawers and a long rectangle storage ottoman at the foot of the bed, both from world market.
our dining room furniture was changed out from my old set to a set of 6 micro fiber parson chairs and a farmer's styled table, all from world market.
as you can see, we like the quality/price of things we can find at world market.
Stratsey!!!! Those black cabinets are freaking awesome. I dream of putting dark cabs in my kitchen! My kitchen is significantly smaller, but that's the look I'm aiming for. Most people look at me like I have 2 heads when I talk about dark like that. Yours is kitchen porn for me. Do you have any specifics you can share?
We went back and forth for a long time between white cabinets and dark...especially since our floors are stained a medium walnut color. I know white has been on trend for awhile now, but I'm just drawn to dark cabinets and in the end they won out. I have a lot of natural light in the kitchen and I think the counter tops and backsplash being light helps to balance it out. They're by Yorktowne Cabinetry (it's who the builder uses) and the finish is Java. Wood is maple. The reason I'm doing the island in a contrast color is because there are so many cabinets and countertops in there that I really wanted to break it up. The top on the island will be butcher block.
All the appliances are from the Kitchenaid Architect II Series, except for the microwave. The microwave is actually H's splurge because he didn't want anything on the counter and I wanted a strong hood for the cooktop. It's by Jenn-Air.
Granite is Kashmir White and we put up this subway tile and listello, but in an off white:
Any other specifics you want to know, feel free.
I would love to see pictures of your cabinets and hardwood floors. We want to do something similar when we redo our kitchen and I'm always excited to look at pictures of kitchens. Definitely post them!
