We are saving for one currently with the basic L in a raised ranch, DH is quoting it will be around 10-12k. All demo, install we will do. Also, we are trying to within the neighborhood and not go overboard, with certain items, like granite, probably do quartz or cement tops. I really like to do stainless steel- but since this is not our forever home, it will have to wait.
We have a small galley kitchen, in a crappy neighborhood, so it didn't make sense to go 'all out' on the kitchen. We would never see a return on the investment.
DH is very handy and has awesome carpentry skills. We gutted the kitchen, and DH did all the work himself.
We spent 3k excluding appliances. When we had our house on the market, people consistently raved about the kitchen, so I hope it isn't just in my mind that it looks nice. (it wouldn't look great in a 500k house, but it is perfect for our 900sqft, 150k house)

Disclaimer: I'm in Canada so prices will be different.
We spent around 30k for our kitchen Reno. This included new maple cabinets, counters, an island, new drywall to fix the bulkhead, etc, paint, new sink and faucet. This also included new hardwood floors on the whole main floor, light fixtures and electrical work.
DH did the demo, plumbing and all the installations with the exception of the cabinets. We did hire an electrician though.
We spent about $20k on our full gut kitchen remodel and DH did the entire thing himself so that is for materials only, MCOL area. High end refrigerator and range, as well as tile. DH custom fabricated the cabinets and countertops.

Well, we did everything ourselves except installing the granite, and it ran us around $12k. New floors, lighting, cabinets, plumbing, sink. Cherry cabinets and granite countertop. This was awhile ago, too. Maybe 2006. I'm guessing if we had paid for labor it would have been double that.
We completely gutted our two back rooms, down to the studs, to put in a 350 SF eat in kitchen. We had to remove a load bearing wall and install a beam.
We got 90SF of granite for our counters. All the construction, cabinets, granite, tile backsplash, refinished wood floors and miscellaneous expenses cost us around 65K.
Question: Did you hire a design-build firm or an architect? If so, is that included in the price? Or did you design it yourself? I am calling people about my own house this weekend and am not sure where to start but know I need a pretty extensive remodel.
Thanks!
My husband's an engineer and his father is an architecht, so we started the basic design ourselves. Once we had a good idea what we wanted to do, we called our next door neighbor, who has a design/construction company and went from there.
DH is fairly handy, and did a full demo, involving moving walls and plumbing, on his own for our master bath and dining room, but both projects took forever. So long in fact, that we were able to pay for it as we went along, rather than touching the money we saved for it. While I trusted him to do the kitchen himself, I didn't want an 18 month project on the kitchen I'd already waited 7 years for.
With the contractor, the complete gutting and redo of the kitchen took 3 months, almost to the day.
This is the kitchen I want to copy. Opinions? I want to do all mocha counters, though. And stainless appliances because I have an issue with non-matching whites. Or would stainless ruin it?
