It took me a good 15 minutes to explain to my husband what Steampunk is--we landed on Victorian robots. My city is trying to become the International Steampunk capital, and it hosts a festival every year, complete with mayoral elections (one candidate wore a gorilla suit; at least I think it was a costume!). I don't think it's really caught on yet, so you'll see intermittent bands of people in capes and goggles walking past very confused looking teenagers and families. They're doing it again this year, though, so I guess it's not a total bust.
wasn't there an episode of gilmore girls where Rory and the guy that's on the good wife went to an underground steampunk party- and jumped off some scaffolding???
No, that wasn't steampunk. That was just a bunch of spoiled rich kids in an underground society at Yale (Life and Death Brigade) doing stupid things without permission, knowing that they'd never get in trouble because they had rich daddies who would always bail them out. The L&DB always does one big thing at their events, and the big thing at that particular event was jumping off the scaffolding while dressed in old-timey clothes and holding umbrellas. No steampunk was involved.
It is a bit hipstery. I liked it before it was cool, anyhow.
Basically, it combines Victorian technology (hence the steam) and aesthetics with contemporary subculture values (such as cyberpunk). If you see a computer that looks steam powered or an ipad that appears to run with watch gears, you are looking at steampunk.
Etsy and Pinterest are full of shitty examples. It can be very stunning and clever when done well. When it is not, it looks like some chump was trying to spend the remainder of a gift card from the hardware store.
This is exactly what MH said. I didn't understand it when he said it either. I don't really understand what a hipster is either, (even after some awesome LA GBCNers tried to explain it to me at brunch) so that might explain some things.

OMFG this right here....http://offbeatbride.com/2012/11/st-louis-steampunk-wedding
That is pretty much what I was going for. Only I don't like the hats on the bridesmaids. She would have been better off have everyone do a strapless dress with a black satin bolero with a high ruffled neckline and cap sleeves. Something like this: thelunaticandtheswan.blogspot.com/2010/01/steampunk-wedding-bridesmaid.html
And the groom's vest is a bit much, but otherwise yeah. I LOVE her hat/veil/hairsyle combo. Love it.
What's the potato on top of the wedding cake? Is that blimp or what?

I submitted an exhibition proposal that included this guy's work once. I lost out to conceptual art. At least you guys will appreciate Stephen Berkman!
