Thanks for all of the tips ladies! I will definitely use as many as I can get.
Since we fly up to CT with DH, I will try strapping DS in the Ergo and not allowing him to get out to see if that works. LO has long legs so I am not sure how comfortable this will be, but we shall see.
Most flight attendants will not allow you to strap your kid in an ergo. It's not an FAA approved device, so they make you take them out. I've tried on 2 different flights.
I've flown alone with 2 kids. It's nerve wracking but do-able. Lots of snacks. M&Ms are good. Shredding the magazines after coloring or putting stickers in them. Magnadoodle for you to draw things on demand.
Also, going up in the air seemed to keep my kids awake and they always fell asleep on descent. Drove me bonkers.
When it was just DD I held her in a sling and had the carseat and carryon tossed in the stroller. Someone has always helped me get through security - either TSA or another passenger. Getting from the jetway to your seat is the hardest part, especially if they have an extra seat and you take the carseat on. I do like having the carseat though.
It was a nightmare traveling by myself with a carseat. Pack as little as possible. Keep him in the Ergo. I just had too much stuff. We have a CARES system now, but it is for older kids.

I have flown with my daughter lots of times over the past 2 1/2 years on several different airlines (Southwest, US Airways, Alaska Air, United, and Continental). I have always kept her in the Ergo while flying. The flight attendant will make you unbuckle the back neck/upper back buckle during takeoff and landing, but she still can sit in it just fine. The rule is that she cannot be "fastened" to you during those times but sitting in it is just fine, and then it's easy to just rebuckle her when takeoff is over.
I am surprised pp was allowed to keep her child in the ergo. Don't expect them to let you do that.
We flew with DS around that age and I took two snacks for each hour of flight time. DS got super excited about those since at the time he thought a wheat thin was a super special treat. I also took a bunch of new small toys (maybe ten for a seven hour flight) and wrapped each one. I would pull them out whenever he got antsy. The unwrapping took some time and made each thing more exciting. Stickers, crayons, a travel magnadoodle and pipecleaners were all big hits.
I also let him run around the airport before boarding the plane, brought his lovey, and traveled over nap time. I was still nursing too so made sure to nurse on takeoff and landing. A cup of juice or milk will work too.
How do you strap a carseat to the stroller and still have the kid in the stroller? Are there devices that let you do this?
I use bungee cords to attach the car seat securely to the stroller -- nestling it into the stroller with the seat up. Then I put my son in the seat and use the harness to buckle him in (because if he sat forward he'd tip the stroller forward).
