I have a problem with these sorts of 'stories' - what kind of place has an automatic 18% tip on a $35 meal? I could see if it was a group of 6+/8+ - but then the bill would be higher.
I used a $25 restaurant.com coupon for me and MH to have dinner at a pizza place. The bill came out to a little more than $35 and because of the coupon they included an 18% tip in our final bill, even though it was only two of us eating.

I understand where the restaurants are going with this (most people who use discounts/gift certificates tip on the final amount vs the original total) but I have a problem with them doing it automatically.

I can totally respect restaurants doing this with discounts, because I'm sure a lot of waiters get stiffed by MM diners (and even the most well-intending diners can forget that the total is lower than it should be).
Party of 3 at the Olive Garden, I don't understand as much. It definitely wasn't an international crowd there that wouldn't understand US tipping norms. Though we actually probably would have tipped more if it hadn't been added automatically. We just all signed it as is, while we would have left at least 20% if we had had to do the math ourselves.

The article says he scratched out the automatic tip, which makes me think he really wanted to leave zero. Otherwise he wouldn't have questioned the 18% or scratched it out; he could have just put 0 under additional tip.
Either way, I think it's crappy especially the snarky message. It's not the waiter's fault that automatic gratuity is added. When I was a waitress we HAD to do this for parties over 8. If we didn't, we and the restaurant could get in loads of trouble because they didn't want us automatically adding it to some large parties and not others. Said it could become a legal issue if customers found out we were picking and choosing who to "force tip," so we always had to do it. Customers often got angry at ME and complained about the required gratuity, becoming very irate and rude. It was also policy to let large groups know about this gratuity ahead of time, so they were assholes to me during the entire meal thereafter. I had no control over it, but it didn't matter to them apparently.
If he was planning on leaving 0, that's just downright low. If you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to eat out. That is an expense of eating out and waiters make most of their money from tips.
I would have given some amount of a tip even if it wasn't alot it still shows appirecation for the service and is the right thing to do. That was just a tacky move on the person's part. Oh well, at aleast the person has been outed on net haha but they won't be that ballsy again.
As someone who serves tables on Sat nights, I have been stiffed by large parties before. Our boss does not like to add the 18% because he feels as though if a server knows automatically they are getting 18% they do not need to perform their best. I know my state (MA) you can request they remove the 18%. And likewise we can add per the request of the table.
Also we have a lot of religious groups that come in and tip very minimally if anything but leave brochures instead.

What's funny is that I usually tip 20%, so the waiter theoretically could've gotten more if they didn't determine the tip themselves. It worked out to where I only had to leave a $20 on the table to cover our OOP expenses, so I think he got about 19% from us.
I used to take my grandmother out to lunch at a local diner after we went to church. She's absolutely not stingy or mean, but she would tip as if it was 25 years ago. As we got up from the table I used to try to toss in an extra dollar or two without her seeing me, lol.

You can leave extra tip in addition to whatever has been added on automatically. We've done this many times. ]

Yeah, that's what I did. Leaving the $20 bill on the table rounded it up to something like 19%. I didn't have any singles on me to put it to 20%+. (I'm amazed I had the $20 on me, actually, since I rarely carry cash.)
Gah. This bothers me so much. It seems like the guys is trying to make himself out to be a saint because he pays 10% to his church and should be above having to give 18% to a waitress. 10% of my income to church is a lot of money while 20% of my dinner bill is like $10. Come on, Buddy. Just fork it over.
Wouldn't the 10% out of a Pastor's income go back to his church, and theoretically, back to himself?
This has hoax/the waitress got stiffed, knew he was a pastor, and wrote in everything except for his 0 with a line through it written all over it. There was a similar viral receipt thing a few months ago, and it turned out that the waiter or waitress had made it up. I have little doubt that this is the case here. So I don't expect it to make sense.
First, she doesn't give the server a tip. Then, because that wasn't bad enough, she calls, gets the server fired, and shows no remorse. Yes, she said she left $6 in cash but I'm not too sure I believe her. Why not just leave the $6 tip on the cc receipt and keep your cash?

She didn't get the server fired. She got a different server, who scanned the receipt and posted (including the customer's name) it on the internet to shame her, fired. I absolutely understand why Applebee's would fire an employee for that. I'd certainly expect to be fired for that.
She also says that she gave the server a $6 cash tip. That's $.29 cents shy of the 18%. My in-laws never leave tips on credit cards -- they always leave tips in cash. I think because they think that's easier for the server? But at any rate, that is something that people do. And I could see her doing it because she was pissed about the automatic gratuity? Or she could be lying.
LOL that this happened at Applebees. True story, my BFF at the time got fired from Applebees for following a customer out and asking her why she didn't leave a tip 3 nights in a row. Go figure this had to be Applebees.

In the first paragraph it says that the server was fired and later goes on the say the server that uploaded it was fired. After reading the reddit version I know for sure the uploader was fired but I am not clear about the actual server. I only think the uploader should be fired because she didn't block out the name.

Or she could be lying. I agree with what you are saying but she's totally lying. Well, I think she is. Why on earth would you cross out the tip and write the comment when you end up leaving a 17% tip ($6 according to her) on the table. If you are leaving a tip of 17% you aren't going to go through the trouble of pointing out that you pay 10% in tithes and then leave 17%.
This all just reinforces my feelings that I never want to work in a restaurant again. I did enough of that growing up.

The first paragraph does not say that the server who served the pastor was fired. It says that the uploader was fired.
"JANUARY 31--The St. Louis pastor responsible for the credit card receipt heard ‘round the Internet termed her snide scribblings a “lapse in my character and judgment,” adding that the Applebee’s employee who posted the receipt online was fired yesterday after she lodged a complaint with restaurant managers."

WTF. Brochures don't pay the rent.
It is super awesome when it is a Chick Tract and it is the exact size of a folded up bill, with a fake $5 printed on it. That will pay the bills, no problem. My sister used to work at Hooters and got more than one of these.
