Back story is that I used to get a bonus equal to 20% of my salary if goals were met/exceeded. Which they always were. They got rid of that and told us is was now discretionary.
Met with my boss beginning of the month. My annual bonus was to be 3%. Major drop. Esp consider we were told that the bonus could be up to 7%.
Well today was payday. I got 1%. E-mailed my boss who told me he requested 3 but was granted 1%.
Between this and my 2% raise going to FICA I feel like I am never going to get ahead. Really trying not to cry at work.

Ugh, that sucks. I definitely can relate to the feeling of never being able to get ahead in general.
I'm also sick of the, "Well, at least you HAVE a job!" I get that it is still rough out there...but honestly, you can only hear that so many times before it just makes you even more depressed!
I'm sorry, that's so disappointing. Are there any more opportunities that are looking interesting?
I have an interview next week that sounds like a good enviroment and will be a boost in salary with comissions (something else that was taken from me). The recruiter is new so hopefully she was being accurate I will find out next week.
For us, we give our selves a rating, then our boss rates us and we get our end of year review. The boss puts the rating in the Bonus system and then it goes on to the next level where it can be adjusted up or down but they have to include reasons with their adjustment.
So if the bonus standard is 10% of salary and you rated a 9 or 10 you get 10% but if you rated a 2, you get nothing, 3-4 is 5% etc.
It does stink. I was talking to my boss other day about this, and with the 3% taxes and 1% increase of medical, and no raise, makes for a completely shitty let down.
I'm sorry, that totally sucks. It's even worse when your own boss won't give you a heads up.
At my old job we budgeted in our own salaries from our dept budget. I budgeted a 10% raise into my annual budget and it was approved 2 levels above me. Then the regional director decided he didn't give a shit what we did for our own budget and gave everyone $.78/hour raise. Yeah, that wasn't 10% dude.

I got the next to best rating possible which I think is called excellent. The only other was is never given out. The company sets an amount into a pool so anyone with a solid or above qualifies. I guess the pool was set low.

That sucks .
I would maybe check with your boss to see if there's room for a possible increase in a few months. If you're rated so highly, they should be compensating you for that work.

That sucks, and is disappointing. Probably even more so because it was a nasty surprise.
But at least you got a 2% raise? Neither Calvin nor I has seen one in forever, so the FICA increase was unmitigated.
I totally get the "how will we ever get ahead" feeling. We met with a FP last summer who kept talking about what we should do with our raises every year. Our whats?
