I am going to a work event at the Palace Hotel in June. I won't have a car and will have limited time. Are there any good restaurants nearby I should go to? Any fun things I should see? For past work trips, I've done the Pier, saw the seals, did a boat ride under the Golden Gate Bridge, rode on the cable cars, and drove to Sausalito for a delicious dinner by the bay. I'd like to do an Alcatraz night tour, but don't think I'll have time. My price range is moderate.
I just got back from SF. I would for sure make a trip to the Ferry Building. My husband & I had a date night at Nopa, and it was delicious. A word of caution, the mixed drinks are regular priced but miniature! Nopalito is the more casual Mexican version in Hayes Valley, a fun neighborhood. If you're at all veggie-inclined, Greens in Fort Mason is fabulous for dinner at sunset. I've heard Delfina in the Mission District is really good. We went to Pizzeria Delfina (next door) for lunch, followed by ice cream at Bi-Rite Creamery (across the street) and walked around Dolores Park our last day there. Little Italy is full of great food too. As far as transportation, I took the bus everywhere. It's super easy if you have an iPhone, but still easy otherwise. It's $2 and will get you basically anywhere. I stayed near Union Square/Chinatown, so the Ferry Building was walking distance. Take advantage of great public transportation!
Unfortunately, I think the Castro location of Home closed
I agree with the King of Thai recommendation. I also love Ananda Fuara (anandafuara.com) and always recommend it to out-of-towners as an inexpensive, unique dining experience, although be warned it is in a sketchy part of town.
If you can, head to the Mission and grab a burrito---you can take BART or MUNI to 16th and Mission. I like Pancho Villa, but everyone has their own personal favorite.
It's a chain, but I also like Burger Bar--it's on the 6th floor of Macy's in Union Square.
I also like a cheap slice of pizza from Blondie's on occasion (by Sephora/Forever 21the Gap near the mall)---it's far from "classy" but it hits the spot when a greasy slice is what you need.
