We rent a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom condo, a little over 1000 sq feet. It's $1125/month. Another condo in our complex is for sale for $130,000 but it hasn't been renovated as much as our unit has- so I'm guessing this one is probably worth a little more.
We paid just under 400k for a 3 bed, 2 bath condo. We live in what I would consider a higher cost of living area and I want to move every time I watch House Hunters and see people getting Mc Mansions for less than my condo.
KA's yurt in the woods would go for about 600K here. (Out of curiosity we looked at a one room house about that size, no electricity, no direct road access, you had to hike a quarter mile up a wooded hill to get there. It was listed above $500K)
We paid just under 300k for an 800 sq ft home (I had to check that), not updated since it was built in 1970. In NJ. It had the community, and semi-closeness to the beach that we wanted.
We live in a HCOL area and purchased a 1700 sq ft house built in 1989 for $170,000. It's a bit of a fixer upper - the fundamentals like the roof and hvac have been replaced recently but the cabinets and hardware are still dated

We bought our home for $440k in early 2007 - built in 1986, 2500 sq feet SFH, largish backyard (for our neighborhood), we live in the DC metro area. Prices plummeted in our area right after we bought but prices have been slowly coming back up for the past several years. We want to move to a different area of the country but we need the price of our house to come up a bit more before we would even think about putting it on the market. It makes me want to cry to think what we could buy with $440k in other parts of the country.
The 'burbs have much higher prices. TONS higher. our current neighborhood is pricier than much of Detroit b/c we're bordering on a very nice suburb that has crazy high prices. I'm a short walk to their nice shops, and all through nice neighborhood, no sketchy areas in my path.
I was reading your posts and laughed. I knew you had to be Detroit. Its amazing the homes you can find. My parents are right outside of Detroit and bought their house for $200k, 18 years ago. At their last appraisal, it was only worth about $56k.
I always thought of our area as HCOL, but I suppose it's not as much so as I thought.
We bought a 3 bed/2.5 bath, approx. 2000 sqft house for a little over $300k. It was built in 1994, but the kitchen and bathrooms had all been upgraded.
When we were looking, H really wanted something turn-key, while I was willing to do some work if it meant we could get a "deal." No go for him. It took 6 months of house hunting before we agreed on this house and jumped on putting in the offer!

Near San Diego, we rented a 1,866 sq ft town home for a little over $2k a month. 3Br, 3.5 bath. I think my landlord (at the time - April 2005) paid $530k, and zillow shows that it sold for $308k sometime in 2009.
We're about between Toronto and Detroit - about 2 hours from each. Our city is actually very reasonable compared to where we grew up in the Toronto suburbs. We paid $275K for our 3+1 bedroom, 1.5 bathroom house. My parents just sold my childhood, 4 bed, 2.5 bath, home 30 mins from Toronto for $635K.
This is when I am reminded of why we live where we do, for now.
We pay $800/month for a 3/2 single-family house, about 1500 square feet. It has not been updated since the 80's and features some lovely wood paneling, but it is on almost a 1/2 acre lot and is in a decent neighborhood. We won't be moving out of it until we leave town.
We rent a 1000ish sq ft house on a basement with 3 beds, 1 bath for $500. My parents bought a 5 bed, 3 bath New construction on 3 acres for $225k 5 years ago. The average sale price in my town is $56k.
This 300 square foot studio is the cheapest apartment for sale in my neighborhood, at $315,000. Plus $800 a month in common charges.
I'll never amount to anything
I'm surprised you can get anything below $500K in the West Village. Even a first floor studio with no a/c, like this gem! LOL
There are currently 10 apartments for sale in the neighborhood that are under $500k! (Out of 128 apartments for sale.
Median price is $1.97 million (not that bad really?), and median price per square foot is $1996 ( ). Yeah, so I think we'll continue to rent for a while.
Our rent is $2300/mo for a 2200 sq ft house (4 bdr, 2.5 bath) but in a neighborhood where the houses are built on top of each other (like, 0.13 acres/lot). The house itself is decent, but not made with quality materials. drafty windows, cheap ugly cupboards, tiny fug plain baseboards, etc, despite being only about 15 years old. When it was for sale, it was listed around $260k. That is typical for prices in this area, so we're going to spend substantially more (at least 2-2.5x as much) on any house we buy. It sucks, but we have been thoroughly disappointed with what we've seen in the lower price range.
Go to city-data.com and type in your town. It will tell you the median home price in your area and the COL index. The median for my town is $393K and the COL index is 132. 100 is average so its a HCOL area.
Interesting! The median for my town is $207k and the COL index is 91.8 so less than average.
FWIW, we bought our house for $250k and are renovating now it with a budget of about 150k.
