DH is a "gun nut" and he won't allow toy guns, either. Even water guns made us uncomfortable for a while. We only caved because all the other little boys at the pool had them, they're a good way to make friends in a new neighborhood, and they don not look realistic.
I caught H doing a "gun finger" with B and lost my shit. The child is barely 2, ffs.
When my brother was 4, my mom had a SAHM watch him during the day while she was working (school hours, so I was at school). The woman had a son the same age.
One day, they went out to run errands and she bought her son a treat/toy, so she let my brother pick out something, too. It was a toy gun. My mom was LIVID. Like, she brought up the story again, 2 years ago (so almost 25 years after the fact) and I said, "yes, I know what story you're going to talk about." She knew the woman was trying to be nice by buying him something, but it never even occurred to her that some people might not be comfortable letting their children play with certain toys. Like guns.
I didn't want to bring it up, because hey, let your kids play with whatever. Just make the decision thoughtfully, you know? And/or realize that other people might have a problem with some more... controversial things.
