As they closed their shop after serving people from Tacoma, Wash., to Halfway, Ore., Aaron and Melissa said they’ve received letters calling them “bigots” and “intolerant.” But the couple said they’re not discriminatory.
“We’re not hateful people,” Melissa said. “We’re just standing up for what we believe in.”
Aaron and Melissa, who could face fines if it’s found they violated the Oregon Equality Act, called the law “petty” and “intolerant.”
But they added that they won’t succumb to the threats of fines and intend to fight the investigation.
“I’m willing to stand up for God, and I’m going to stand up for my beliefs,” Melissa said. “If I lose this business, if I lose that for God, then I lose it for God. And I’ll be proud to lose it for him. That’s just me. That’s what I believe.”
Ugh. Yes, you ARE discriminatory. You discriminated against a gay couple.
And these types of protests are just so awesome. Let's show our support for homophobia and discrimination! That'll show The Man!
Wait. They are seriously arguing that the law against discrimination is "petty"?!? The people who refused to sell a cake to a gay couple thinks the LAW is petty?!?

It's one thing for the store owners to be gay-hating assholes, but I'm more angry that they had their busiest day ever because of what they did. I'd want business owners who turn away customers to learn the usual consequences of turning away business, and here they are being rewarded. I hate everyone.
“Nobody hates (homosexual individuals),” said Vlad Shalashov, who shopped with his wife, Miya, at the bakery for the first time to show support last weekend. “If they don’t like the owner who refused service to them, go somewhere else.”
“Gays and homosexuals is a lifestyle that they’ve chosen. This is what I believe. (The bakery) did not refuse service to them, but they did refuse to participate in having them get married.”
regardless of if you believe that homosexuality is a choice - the law has decided it is not.
should the blacks in the 50's just have found a different lunch counter?
They can do whatever they want and refuse service to anyone for any reason.
Unless that reason is that you're discriminating against a protected class, which in this case includes gays and lesbians.
If the reason is that someone is starting a fist fight, or wearing a shirt with obscenities, or flashing other customers, then yes, by all means, refuse them service.
Sigh. I guess this is ammunition to use against H when he says all of OR is awesome, and I will love it despite the rain/overcast
I don't want to be flippant, but, really, at least I thought OR had some sort of liberal tolerance going for it.
soozy sucks so much I hate that I basically share a name. Such hatred is disgusting it seriously (no, really, not exaggerating) turns my stomach. That such hatred gets support is even more disturbing.
If I ever own a business, I'll refuse to serve bigots. They're not a protected class, right? I'll have a questionnaire before service to determine how tolerant they are.

We're pretty damn liberal in Portland, but the rest of the state, including Gresham, is the yuck. Portland really should be it's own state. Perhaps Seattle and Portland could join up and let the rest of Oregon/Washington fend for themselves.
Also I bet dollars to donuts that this super Christian holier than thou bakery uses chocolate harvested by little tiny child slaves. But I guess they don't care about brown people as evidenced by the ranting.

I wonder how the people of Bend, Ashland and Eugene are going to feel about this.
Also, I didn't hear about any traffic jams yesterday and this is coming from the Tribune (a free conservative weekly), so without doing any research I'd say its pretty likely that this was a small thing and the out of staters were coming all the way across the river from Vancouver. Not that it isn't still disgusting, because it is.
I'm not religious, and by default not Christian, but wasn't Jesus Christ supposed to be all loving and inclusive and whatnot? Poor guy is probably shaking his head at this kind of nonsense done in his name.
You know - deep abiding sadness about people flocking to this place aside - I really have to wonder about people who honestly believe that God cares, DEEPLY, about whether or not you sell somebody a cake. That an omniscient, omnipresent, loving God could possibly be offended by....cake.
What kind of small, petty, score keeping, asshole God are these people worshiping? Not the God that all my Christian friends worship, I can say that with absolute certainty.

We can keep Bend, Eugene and Ashland, too. Can't forget the hippies!
I did hear (on FB) that it was pretty busy. I'm sure that the Tribune exaggerated it, but I do know that it was busy.
