I'm surprised by this too, because I thought pretty much all hospitals had social media policies these days. Certainly all the ones I've had contact with do. I'm willing to bet that if the hospital in question doesn't have one currently, they will have one in very short order.
But, as cville said, that would still be a question of violating hospital policy rather than breaking a law.
Ok but you have posted things, here, about what happened at work. Is that not the same thing? Not that I care, I think your stories are harmless and entertaining and I'm glad you do it sometimes... but what if that person was a poster here and realized you were talking about her.... or someone she knew?
If she got all up in arms I would be all "stfu, we didn't know it was you till you started squawking about it."
LOL, point taken.
I'm going to say that the difference here is that I'm anonymous. Sure, some of you know my real name, or maybe what state I live in. But not a single one of you know the name of the hospital where I work.
A doctor posting on Facebook under her real name cannot make that claim. This makes her much more answerable to what is appropriate for her to post and what isn't.
I don't share my stories on FB for precisely that reason, even if I do sometimes share them here.
the doctor sounds like an asshole, but not a lawbreaker.
that said, so does the patient.
this is where i am.
Exactly. I do agree that everyone needs an outlet but some professions should probably be more careful of what they share with whom... had he/she had a good bitch about it over drinks with friends (ie not gotten caught by medias), would it still be such a big deal?

Also, I'm curious to know how this post made headlines in the first place. Obviously, someone saw it who shouldn't have, or we wouldn't be talking about it.
Please tell me that she's not dumb enough to have patients as Facebook friends.

I find myself cringing on a daily basis now because of posts I see on FB - friends who are professionals posting in detail about their clients/patients/etc., my teenaged cousins putting their every goddamn thought out into the cybersphere, old high school classmates calling out other people with "you know who you are" type posts.
People have up and taken leave of their senses. This doctor included.

No, but if she's in a relatively small community one of her acquaintances might know the patient. The three pieces of information (location, prior stillborn and date of delivery) would make it pretty easy to track back.
