42" which seemed perfect but after we moved, and put it into its new room it seems small. It is certainly enough tv. But when it dies we will likely go a bit bigger. But this room is pretty long.

We have a 60 inch in our living room and a 42 inch in our bedroom.
Trust me, I thought 42 inches was plenty (haha that sounds dirty), but I'm okay with 60 inches since our living room is long (20 or so feet long). Plus, my H is a tech junkie and got it on BF so it would have been next to impossible to talk him out of it.
47" We used to have 50" but when we needed a new tv I told the H I wanted to go smaller. The 47" was an amazing deal, so that's why we went with it. He's a nerd gamer who needs HD too. The man never asks for much, so I didn't fight it.
Ours is only 32", and I wish it was a little bigger. In this house, 42" would be good.
We are waiting until we move to get a new TV, so that we can get the right size for the space. We have really small family rooms in our neighborhood, and some of our neighbors have a huge tvs that I can't even focus on because they are too big/too close.
37 inches and I think it's fine given that the room isn't that wide...we could go to 42 I am sure but then it wouldn't fit in our cabinet and I love our cabinet.

52", which is definitely big enough. H keeps joking that now that there are bigger TVs, he should upgrade, but a bigger TV would look ridiculous in here. If I had bought the TV, I would have gone a little smaller (H bought it before we met), but I've gotten used to it so now regular sized TVs look tiny to me. It did take me quite a while to get used to the size, my old tv was tiny, blurry, and non flat screen.
32 inches. It's great for our average size square LR. I also like it how it'll fit on any stand so I can rearrange or hang it on the wall someday no worries.
We don't really "do" TV so I'm probably not the one to ask, but we have is great for us. The little bit I do watch I usually do on my tablet on the treadmill..so any screen bigger than that is like a movie theater to me..lol.
60". It's huge, but the kitchen and living room are basically one big room and I wanted to be able to see TV while I'm in the kitchen. I kinda wish I'd gone a bit smaller, like 55" though. oh well. I like it.
I really like it. We don't go to the movies, so we got a great TV and wired the family room for surround sound. Movies with my dogs!
ETA: We chose that size by measuring how far from the TV wall the couch is, and then used the guides to figure out the biggest TV that we would comfortably watch from that distance.
We have a 55 inch rear projection HD in the LR - we 'inherited" it from IL's. I don't mind the size but really wish it was a flat screen. When it dies or we just have the $$ to blow, we will switch to a flatscreen. We have a 32 inch HD flatscreen in the MBR.
I think our living room one is around 42-46, our basement (movie/sports watching) one is 60, and the bedroom is around 32. They probably do look huge if you aren't used to them, but you will get used to it. I would follow Susie's advice above and take some measurements and then find a guide about what is an appropriate size for your space. Also keep in mind if you will be turning it to see from different distances. Ours is on a stand that allows it to swivel - so sometimes we are only 10-12 feet away in the living room, but other times we are 20+ feet away when watching from the kitchen.
ETA: Personally, I would go for quality over size. (I am sure there is a joke in there). You will find there are some big price differences as you get to certain sizes (such as 60+).
We have a 50" in our living room (20'x 20' room size) and I think it looks kind of small on the wall actually, but right now its the only thing on the wall.
