Ugh I thought it was terrible. Like, awful.
Usually I don't feel that strongly on episodes that other people didn't like (I didn't think last weeks was bad like others did) But seriously. Last night's was stupid.
Mainly because of Ted's speech to The Mother, though. Without that then I would've thought it was a lame filler episode with no real point. The speech was sweet.

Same. And I don't know why but the part of the speech where he talks about having 45 more days with her made me think maybe she is dying in the future, but I'm pretty sure she's referenced in the future previews when they're all old so I doubt my hunch is right.
Future Barney had a wedding ring on! I wonder why they've hid it in other future previews. Maybe he divorces Robin and has three or four other wives?
I didn't like it. I feel like the writers don't know what to do until we meet the mother. It seems like a bunch of fluff to fill time.
I would've felt that way if they didn't have the scene with Ted talking to The Mother - the speech saved it for me. Although I think this episode did a pretty good job of showing that everyone in the group except Ted is moving on with their lives.
There are four more episodes left this season. I'm betting that the next two are just lame fillers, and they're saving the good stuff (or whatever good stuff they have left in the tank, anyway) for the season finale and maybe the episode the week before the season finale.
I get that its sweet, but I don't really think that it added anything that we didn't know. I was annoyed by the whole episode though, and at that point I was so over it. From what I understand, that speech doesn't actually ever happen in real life, right? Cuz there's no way he would KNOW if he's gonna meet her in 45 days (and this particular scene was different than the rest of the episode). The only thing I was thinking was how creepy it would be if some dude with bloodshot eyes came to my door and started saying shit like that haha. But then I don't know if I missed something, because in the voice-over he says to his kids something along the lines of "you know what I did next"...right? So for me, it was mostly just confusing and creepy.

Ted from the year 2030 was saying that that's what he would have wanted to do if he knew what lay ahead of him at that point in his life.

The speech gave me the feeling that the mom is dead in the future when he's talking to the kids. i got this whole she's gone and I'd give anything to have had that extra time with her vibe from it. it made me flash back to the episode where Lily and Marshall are writing their if I die letters and future Marshall reads Lily's and their in black and they seem sad. And w set of it's post the mom's funeral and Marshall read it b/c he's thinking what if.
i'm probably wrong but it's just hit me as a very post losing someone speech
hopecounts, OOOOHHHHHHHHHH!! That DOES make a lot of sense. It would also explain why they hell he's telling his kids all about how he met their mother...

Chronologically I don't think it makes sense for the mom to be dead at the time he's telling his kids the stories (though I also picked up on that vibe). We know the daughter is born in 2014, and she looks about 16 in the couch scenes that start every episode. So "Ted From 20 Years From Now" would already have a dead wife, and I don't think he'd be all glib with 2013 Ted about whether or not he finally got married.
Plus the kids have been bored/impatient at times listening to the story, which I don't think would happen if she were dead.
And I think that 2030 Ted has referred to her in the present tense a few times.
I don't think the tears and the "end of my days" and "I want those extra 45 days" comments were anything more than 2030 Ted knowing how happy they're going to wind up together, and wishing that poor lonely 2030 Ted knew that he only has to wait a little bit longer.
Another vote for waste of time. Yes the speech was nice at the end but we had to wade through a bunch of stupidity to get there so it didn't save the episode for me. DH had the same thought as pumpkin about the mom dying.
I'm getting bored by it. It seems like the writers don't know what to do, so they're resorting to contrived episodes with gimmicks. If I weren't watching this with my husband, I probably would've quit it a long time ago.
I feel they are setting up for a big "holy shit" and the mother is dead in the future. I think that was the point. Dh made this point a few days ago and I am coming around to it. Could be off, but it seems fitting that the series has dragged for so long-all these stories oleading to her for her children.
I don't think she's dead. Wouldn't he be telling his kids about HER if she were and not a long ass story about HIM before he met her
Well, Ted really IS a self-centered douche, lol ...
I agree with you, though. Based on his stories and the kids' reactions, I don't think that she's dead/dying. And I've heard some people suggest that 2030 Ted is dying, which I also don't buy.
I don't think the teary speech was anything more than, "2030 Me knows that I'm going to be so in love with you, and I wish I could tell Depressed 2013 Me that I'm not going to be alone much longer."
