Just saw that the pre-cooked spiral sliced ham our OOT guests brought with them for our Easter dinner has a Use By date of March 16.
WWYD? Cook it or toss it? 11 people here for Easter dinner tomorrow. No back up. It's been in the original vacuum sealed packaging in the refrigerator since they bought it 2-3 weeks ago.
That's 2 weeks past the use by date, I wouldn't use it. For me, I'm especially odd about ham/pork expiration dates. Probably over so but still 2 weeks seems long to me. You might call the meat department at the store you usually shop at and ask them what they think - I'm guessing your guests hadn't frozen it during these 2 weeks?
I don't know when they bought it. It's been in the refrigerator the entire time except for the 15-hr drive here yesterday and it was in an ice cooler. We can't return it since it was bought at a grocery store we don't have here. This is creating such a sticky mess here. Apparently I'm being a princess for even suggesting it might not be good.
I wouldn't. That's food poisoning waiting to happen. If it it just you and them, and they insist, then cook it but don't eat it.
I had to argue with DH at Christmas about not eating the hams he left in his trunk 36 hours, when it was 55 out. Two eight pound hams, free from work as Christmas gifts. Grr.
I eat lots of questionable stuff. Like I wouldn't think twice about eating pizza that had been sitting out for a day, but no freaking way would I eat that ham.
There's no way in hell I'd serve that. I'd be really worried it would make other guests sick. If it were just my immediate family and them, I'd cook it and not eat it but if other outside people were coming, I would not serve that.
My H says hams are cured in open air for weeks & are not spoilable, so he would eat it. I would not.
I'm not doubting him because I have no idea about this sort of thing, but if that's the cases why wouldn't the expiration date be several months or a year even? I think most cured hams have about a month before they expire. Mine do, anyways.
I just read all the replies and you guys crack me up! Here's the update. I went to store late last night and got a new ham. They were surprised to see a new one this morning, but didn't say anything about it one way or another. I cooked the new ham. The old one is still in the frig in the bag they brought it in.I didn't toss it out because it's not really mine. $10 says they take it home with them.
I probably would have served it if it was just them here and avoided eating it. But my family was coming too and I didn't want to knowingly serve them potentially bad meat. This was an all-around awful situation.
