The gash looks like it could be from an emergency thoracotomy, which could have been done during rescucitation efforts. He's got bilateral needle decompressions in place too.
I must have a circuit loose upstairs, because that stuff doesn't bother me. A kid with snot running down their face who isn't my kid? GAGGING like a fucking tool. Giant holes in someone's dead body? Meh.
My H sent it to me too. It's worse than I thought, but oddly I wasn't grossed out. But I definitely don't want to see it floating around my news feed either.
Right? & he looks alert.. shock but alert. I can't his thoughts being wheeled out and knowing he lost his legs.
I realize that it's newsworthy and whatnot, but I am really bothered by the fact that people have been posting the picture (especially the unedited one) to their FB feed, with the caption of "so sad" or "this is so horrible" - so sad and horrible that you feel the need to blast a picture of this poor guy all over the place? I feel like if I was in some horrible incident like this, I wouldn't want the world to be gawking at me in that moment.
Neither would I. It's a personal thing in a very public tragedy. I guess to each their own but I would feel it disrespectful posting that on my Facebook.

I was thinking it wasn't real because why would there be wood under the head? Boston does autopsies very professionally, according to that show with that lady from Law and Order. And Jerry O'Donnell...
I obviously have no warm feeling towards this piece of shit, but I do hope that his family doesn't get wind of this photo. I imagine that dealing with what they have already heard and seen is awful enough, but they don't need to see this. From what I have read, they seem very shocked and devastated.

Translate for us non-medical types?
They basically had to open in chest to try to save him. Boston.com has an account from the Trauma team that worked on him.

Anytime I see anything 'gruesome' like those photos I am constantly reminded how amazing and perfect/imperfect the human body is. I also regret not pursuing a medical type education.
Ah, I didn't realize he had two gashes. They were talking about the smaller gash, where as you all are talking about the glaringly obvious huge one. Ahem.
Is there a medical reason a big piece of wood is under his neck?
Does it really matter?
I'm not 100% this is a legit photo. The Boston hospitals are usually very professional, so I would be surprised if it got out. That's why I take it with a grain of salt. I think he's dead and all, just is that him?

I don't know how legit the source is, but TMZ confirmed it.
And really, I could absolutely see someone doing this. Just because the hospital is professional, does not mean every single person is.

Yes, I see your point. My concern is well, you know how the conspiracy nuts are. It's going to be twisted somehow. But I'm not sad he's dead, you know?

That looks like the coroner's office, not the hospital. It looks completely legitimate and identical to other autopsy photos I have seen.
Here's a conspiracy theory. Maybe a friend took it to show/glorify the 'sacrifice' that this crazy ass made? These people aren't working with more than one braincell, so it's an idea.
Kind of how some terrorist organizations take credit for attack .0002 seconds after an attack happens. I can see where you're coming from.
I'm kinda numb to these photos. Growing up on the border and getting Mexican news where there was no "Don't show this or that!" I've seen a lot of headless bodies.
This doesn't bother me; Jeff in the wheelchair did.
I don't know if it's the good guy vs bad thing or the alive vs dead. There's something oddly satisfying to me of seeing his dead body though, like others said. I felt the same way when I saw the pix of dead Eric & Dylan from Columbine.

Oh, man, I can't imagine. I was at the opposite border getting Canadian news. It was pretty vanilla, eh.
My parents paid for cable after I showed them our bunny ears got us Mexican news and it was gruesome. It was after my dad retired. It sucked.
I haven't clicked the link, and I won't. I'm sad for his family, who despite his (unknown?) evilness surely still loved him and mourn for his loss. I feel for them that pictures of his dead body are floating all over the internet.
And, while I'm mostly not clicking the link because I'm a big baby, I'm a little at the idea of taking satisfaction at the sight of a dead body. It seems like the one of the very things that separates those of us that do not randomly kill from those of us that do is not taking satisfaction in death of each other. IDK.
I don't think the Jeff photos are private or that the news is wrong for showing them. If someone did that to me, I would want to be front page news. "Look at what they did to me. LOOK!" I don't care if it offends people's delicate sensibilities. The reality of violence is disturbing, and we should not be sheltered from that. It makes me sick and angry. It is easier to not feel something when it is described in text. I do not want to see pictures of sandy hook ever, but I do think some people truly are able to ignore how horrifying these situations are without visual evidence.
