Honestly, I think they realize they can't do this forever. They have obviously been very smart with their money and I think they are prepared for when the gravy train runs out. I bet once this house is "done", they will switch over to Young House Life for updates on family stuff, but I bet ultimately at least John goes back into the workforce.
That makes sense. They're technically floating 2 mortgages right now, so I imagine that they had a lot saved.
I hope they don't frankenstein their new kitchen. I think they need to make smarter decisions in this house-- ones that will last longer. I think people want to see things done right and not on the cheap all of the time.

I hope they actually put in real cabinets instead of painting. I painted mine white (after seeing them do it to their 1st house) so I like the idea, but we don't plan to stay here forever and wanted a cheap fix. I feel like they need fresh material and if they plan to stay their long term then splurge on a better kitchen. I would say that on the blog, but I'm sure that kind of comment would get deleted
Yeah I really hope they do higher quality projects in this house. They definitely cheaped out on their 2nd house. It would actually be nice if they sold their current house furnished because I hate like 90% of their furniture!
Interesting. They said at the end of that post that they could even call this their forever home. If that's the case, what will they do when they run out of projects in the new house? Since their blog hits are decreasing, will they continue to blog? Will John go back to work in an office?
It seems like they would have to continue to move regularly in order for blogging about DIY house projects to remain their only source of income. The whole thing seems much less exhausting to me when you take into account that they are doing it instead of regular employment, rather than in addition to regular employment like the rest of us.

They said something about not using book $$ toward the down payment for the new house, and I can believe it. They've done a ton of side projects lately- lighting line, paint picks, columns in various magazines, etc.

Interest rates have also plummeted since they bought the last house, so I am sure that helps a lot also.
I like the cargola/pergola thing. I don't know that it adds any value but yes it adds character and it was only $240 in materials.
yes I'm sure it's a lot in realtor fees but at the same time it sounds like their monthly payment isn't changing much. the before/afters will be more dramatic with the ugly wallpaper to tear down

I get the impression that they never truly loved this house anyways, and I think everyone should love their house. So for that, I'm glad they found something they fell in love with. And I hope it means better content coming soon!

They've probably already done projects to it....so the blog posts just keep coming and there's no delay. I wonder if that is why they did the book tour when they did it--in between homes?

I find it fascinating that they closed on this house in October and are only just posting about it now. I went back through their monthly roundups to see what they have done since then.
October 2012 - cleaned out scrap wood and junk from basement, had a yard sale
November 2012 - added that dumb wooden box over the removed soap dish in the hall bathroom. Ugh. I wish they would have just left the soap dish there if they knew they were moving. That box drives me nuts. Also, they posted about "what to look for and what to look past when house hunting". And this not-so-true quote:

December 2012 - painted the brick in the sunroom. Why did they do that if they know some people like unpainted brick, and they knew they were leaving?

Not loving the style of the new house but I like more contemporary. Should be interesting seeing what they do with it. I have to admit we did the exact same thing...bought house, fixed up & sold it a few years later, bought another house, fixed it up & then a few years later we found a great deal in house in"dream" neighborhood & bought it without selling house #2. We decided to rent out house 2 & our combined houses are a bit higher than their 2 homes & we arent famous bloggers Just a SAHM & an Architect. Our payments are $3550 combined. I think they'll do fine. We've been in our "forever" house 3yrs & I have the itch to move again but won't do it. Also fix up is much slower this time although we now have 4 kids which takes up a lot of time & money.
