OMG HARD. SO HARD. I cannot move. There was this two mile stretch, from 18-20, all steeply uphill on a freeway with no water, no music, no support. It was seriously like being in hell. I think the organizers deliberately did it to create the impression of emerging from purgatory, because then we crested the hill, went into an adorable residential neighborhood with music and water and cheerleaders and crowds of people. It would have been a nice effect but by then I was just so over it all I wanted was for someone to carry me.

Congratulations! I love the husky and the medal.
You're going to forget how bad your muscles feel. And you're going to want to do it again. (I wrote out a lengthy tale of my first marathon to remind myself of how hard it was. I think it was 6 pages long. LOL.)
I didn't train for my first AT ALL. It was almost a week before I stopped going down the stairs on my ass because my legs weren't quite up to it. I didn't make the non-training mistake again, and wound up shaving an hour and a half off my second marathon.
You finished, that's all that matters!! Congrats!!!!!! (and such a pretty dog)... PS: I find champagne/sparking wine to be a good drink for recovery....
Congrats!! I was going to page you on H&F to ask you about it. I was really curious about the new course. Be thankful they didn't have you run your last 5 miles around Fiesta Island. It's basically where they sent you to die. I don't know why they get a kick out of playing mind games with you that late in the race. That sounds like a mean thing to do to you precisely at the point in the race where you start to fall apart. Great job pushing through!
I didn't train for my first either. I went from 3 miles to 26 miles in 16 wks. I hyperventilated, I held back tears, I swore to anyone that would listen that my foot was broken. Lol 5:10 from when I started, I crossed the finish line swearing I would never do another one.....3 days later, I was planning my next race. 3 years & 3 more marathons, & I've taken 1:24 off of my time. They get easier, they get addictive, & as sick as it sounds, you begin to enjoy them. Congrats on an awesome accomplishment!
clseale - I see you're running Chicago! Have you run it yet? It's awesome! The crowd support is unreal.
I haven't, and I'm so excited! There are 5 of us going, and it will be the first time any of us have even been to Chicago. I've heard nothing but awesome things about the race.
It'll be DH's first, so I'm very happy to hear the crowd support is so great! I'm hoping that if I can get him to stick with me through training & really prepare, it'll be a somewhat enjoyable experience for him.

I'm trying to wrap my brain around running a marathon without training for it, and just cannot. Your muscles must be made of stronger stuff than mine, because I trained my ass off for my first marathon last summer, and the race still kicked my ass six ways to Sunday.
