She looks heavier overall - I'd guess she's put on a good 15 pounds since the first season.
I wondered about this like, okay, obviously it's been 7 (8?) years since the first season, maybe she's just older. But then I thought, well, or maybe they've got her wearing unflattering clothes to advance some aspect of her character.
She's put on weight. She looks heavier in the Johnny Walker commercials.

I think that's part of it too. The sixties are ending, Joan is getting older, and she's not the stylish seductress she was at the beginning of the show. She still symbolizes a bit of the old thinking and old ways that are now becoming outdated - I think she's kind of struggling to bridge that gap, making the leap from secretary to partner and now from 'partner' to actual partner who brings in business.
Are you really trying to play dumb around just saying that she looks like she's gained weight?
No. Because I can't tell whether she (the actress) has gained weight or whether her character is supposed to have gained weight, and I know she's already got implants, so I also don't know whether she's going all Anna Nicole and doing weird hollywood shit with her body.
well her character also had a baby...so yeah, I'd imagine that regardless of what christina's hendricks body is doing, Joan should have gained a few pounds since season 1.
Are they definitely implants? She does look totally different from that old bikini picture, but on the other hand, her whole body is smaller then.
I was a B cup pre-kids - I'm now 30 pounds heavier and I'm an F. If she was a D when she was that thin, then I could definitely see her going up to whatever humongous size she is now naturally, if she put on enough weight and if her body tended to gain weight in the boobs.
Not saying that they aren't implants - just that they don't necessarily have to be, considering that she's not a skinny woman.
ETA: I also cannot imagine WHY you would ever want implants that size. Holy jeez.
There have been other scenes/wardrobe changes where she looks way heavier than this one. I disagree that she looks heavier in her JW commercial. I'm pretty sure they are padding the hell out of her, to advance the whole, "Joan is getting older/more matronly and we want to convey that" idea.

yeah, this was my thought too. Similar weight-boob size differences too. I had tiny boobs in college. Now 10 years later at 30 lbs overweight and postpartum I have rather giant boobs. they'll shrink back down a bit once I'm not a milk factory, but judging by my mother they won't shrink much.
I think her wardrobe has definitely changed as she's a) aged and b) gained more power in the workplace. She's gone for a more mature Liz Taylor look (vs the younger Marilyn look), as well as added more menswear.
I'm with SBP - I didn't take that as a firing. But maybe I'm just naive. If they really wanted to get rid of him, wouldn't they have to buy him out of his share? Or something? That just didn't seem permanent/official enough if it was really a final decision.
when they fired Freddy Rumsen, they told him it was a six-month leave of absence. but it was really a firing.
I want to know her actual measurements before. If they are proportionally similar.
I'm sure she'll have a press release full of specific information about her breasts any day now, because it's definitely y/our business.
FTR, "Has her figure changed, and if so, is this an intentional part of character development on the show?" is a perfectly fine question. "I want records of her band size for the past eight years," on the other hand, strikes me as very assy.

Yeah but Don Draper is not Freddy Rumsen.
I don't think it's a firing. I don't think you can really fire a partner anyway. I definitely took it as a "get your act together" thing.

All I know is that I don't have a clue about what will happen next year. I'm just along for the ride when I watch. So, I feel sympathy and little judgment for Peggy. Her situation is just so interesting to me, blazing trails in the most interesting ways. I do think that some think she has slept her way there still and that will be interesting to watch unfold. I also think there has been a bit of class warfare going on here. I think times are changing, which is why Pete didn't bring to light Bob weaseling his way into the agency. It just doesn't matter as much anymore if you're not a pedigreed white male on Madison Avenue. The interesting irony is that I felt that Don was "fired" for that very reason. He exposed that he has no pedigreed and he was kicked out of the old boys club, which makes Joan a big, fvcking hypocrite for not sticking up for him.
I don't think Don was fired for opening up, he was fired for opening up in meetings and for disappearing all the time.
Honestly he needs a break to deal with all these demons. And advertising is just selling the public a fantasy that they want to hear, which is what he's been living and what is eating away at him. I think it's good for him. Though it was shitty how the partners handled it.

They were so slack jawed about the revelation that they missed an opportunity to hook Hershey's, IMO. Hershey's doesn't need to get more people to eat Hershey's bars, they just need to sell brand loyalty. That's what Don sold them in a brilliant way, IMO.
