One lady at work said "If you can find me one person who has never said that word, I'll strip."
I told her I have honestly never used the word. She doesn't believe me.
i've never used it except reading or quoting someone. and even then i can't usually bring myself to say it. i don't understand why anybody would need to use it.

Exactly! I vividly remember reading a story out loud in class in high school. I was reading, and that word came up. I just skipped right over it. There was no way I was saying it.
ETA: FYC, is that your Mini in your sig? That's my dream car! I'm jealousE

My head almost exploded at work last night. It was after hours and this crazy coworker was defending her, saying that she just thought a plantation wedding would be a "cute idea" and that she felt so bad for her - that everyone has said SOMETHING racist.
I just said that no, it was not a cute idea, and that racism is never cute. Then I had to walk away because it is freaking work and I couldn't say what I really wanted.
If you want to have a wedding AT an old historical plantation building, that's one thing. The "theme" should end there.
My biggest issue with this whole thing is not even that she's a gross bigot (because it didn't surprise me at all), but her current "apology" and the Today show attempt-at-tears. You are defending yourself in court. You are so sure you are in the right that you are willing to FIGHT for it. You are not sorry. You are only sorry that you are getting dropped. Gross.

Shit, you can dress up like Scarlett O'Hara, too. But WTF is wrong with someone if they think that you can dress someone up like a slave? And who the fuck sees a black man in a tuxedo and thinks he looks like a slave? That association would never cross my mind.

Right. When I first saw the transcript that she thought a "plantation theme" would be "cute," I thought "oh, well maybe people don't realize that there are plantation homes that you can rent out for weddings? .....and then I kept reading...
I can't even tell you how many people on my feed are defending her. It's sickening:
Okay you can agree or disagree with this if you want, I don't really like or dislike Paula Dean, I know her cakes & other desserts Walmart carries are really tasty but really how many of us if put under oath could honestly say we've never said the same thing @ one point in time or another. My parent's & their parents were raised with this being a commonly used term, not that I agree I'm just stating a fact, my parents raised us differently & I will teach Owen that we don't say it but to me that negative term isn't tied to a color but a life style. It has nothing to do with skin color in my opinion. Hope not to have offended anyone but I don't agree that people should start hating her, who of us hasn't made a mistake or said something we later regretted. She's older and from Georgia, I'm sure she grew up hearing it alot, but I don't agree that she should be punished for past mistakes, who of us is without sin, cast the first stone!
and
I do believe better things are in store for her... I think she will end up with even bigger and better sponsors out of all of this... God has a way of opening many doors that you never knew were even possible.
