Yikes! I'm glad you caught it before it got really bad!
Tampons can't be flushed! People don't want to believe this, but it is true. Ask any plumber.
I'm not a plumber, but IT'S TRUE! I dont even use tampons anymore (DIVACUP4LYFE!) but my mom was a freak about this and told us to never, ever flush them. The only time I did was in public restrooms, and even then I felt guilty
Lol guys...when a septic or pipes back up, since your toilet and your shower pipes are connected, whatever is flushed can back up into the shower. No one is stuffing tampons down their shower drains.
My parents told me never to flush them , bc we were on a septic system. Then when I moved to city water, I continued to throw them in the trash. I'm glad I never got in the habit of flushing!

No grosser than having to dig up your yard to replace a pipe that's too packed with tampons to be snaked. Lots of gross things go in the trash. Tampons do not break down in waste water like TP. So the ones that don't get stuck in your pipes can get stuck on the way to the wastewater treatment plant where they need to be fished out.
This happened when I was a kid, except my dad told me it was a bunch of white mice. So I was horrified and near tears thinking about all these poor mice dying this horrible death in the pipes under our house. And then my mom was like "Oh my god, Frank. YOU CAN SAY TAMPON OUT LOUD."
Our sewer line just recently backed up onto our front lawn. When we came home from work there was wet toilet paper and tampons strewn across the lawn. It was not awesome and cleaning it up was not joyful.

OMG this is awful. I don't have the stomach to handle stuff like this.

Don't those of you who flush recognize that this is the reason why public toilets have the DON'T FLUSH THE TAMPON DOWN THE TOILET signs and a separate place to put them?
Reformed Flusher here. The same thing happened to me a couple of years ago! I never knew. And I guess I thought all the signs in public restrooms were just, you know, for show.
I don't understand why anybody would be embarrassed by the plumber having to unclog their drain of tampons or being grossed out by tampons all over the lawn when the septic tank explodes when you're the one who flushed the damn things to begin with.
I thought if you had city water it was ok to still flush them? Growing up we had city water and my high school boyfriend at the time had septic. So knowing they're bad for septic I threw my tampon in their trash all wrapped up. A few days later I went over again and his mom told me it was ok to flush them because their dog took it out of the trash and ran around the house with it. I wanted to die. This boy was also the pastors son. I do throw them out at my own house.
Even if you thought it was ok for your pipes to flush them, you do realize that some poor bastard who works at the waste treatment plant has to strain them out of the sewage and dispose of them, right? What do you think happens to them? They don't dissolve.
That shower goes into the main drain line out from the house. The shower just happened to be where it backed up and overflowed.
So if you don't flush them do you throw them in the trash?? That seems gross to me.
Yes. Just wrap them up and toss them. If you have a dog, I suggest getting a can with a lid that snaps closed or keep your trash can on the back of the toilet.
