I'm having a hard time not being snotty to someone.

So, this half marathon that I am doing in San Francisco is with 2 girls that I used to work with and one new person from the lab that they invited.

I sent an email to everyone saying that we should start thinking about making hotel reservations ASAP because there are 30000 runners and I want to make sure we get a hotel that is walking distance from the starting line. I asked if they knew whether or not the race organizers had a list of recommended hotels.

The girl I don't know responded "I don't know if there is a list, but there are a lot of hotels in San Francisco".

NO SHIT, dumbass. I am well aware that SF has a lot of hotels. However, there are likely only a handful that will meet our needs. This ain't my first rodeo, I have traveled for races this size before and I know how fast the best located hotels fill up.

I am figuratively sitting on my hands to stop myself from replying to her in that fashion.

Why would you let an email from someone you don't know/have never met before get you so upset? Wouldn't it be just as easy to nicely reply that although SF may be full of hotels, you really want to book one close to the starting linr because it's not your first rodeo?

Yea, I think her response was a bit dense, and not at all helpful.

I assume you're doing Nike Women's? My recommendation would be to stay as close to Union Square as possible within a block or two (that is where the start was 3 years and 2 years back, I assume it is still the same. I know there is a Hyatt literally right there, but it is expensive. If you're willing to fork over the cash I'd stay there if they still have openings. I wish I remembered the name of the place we stayed the first year we ran it. It was so loud we all didn't get to sleep until about 3am. I obviously would not recommend it.
DH and I have also stayed at the Parc 55 it is fairly close (~5 blocks I think) and was very nice.
And definitely book ASAP. It is insane there that weekend and a lot of people have probably already booked.

The second year we ran it we stayed over by Presidio with the parents of my friend's friend. We were able to take a bus most of the way - had to walk about half a mile from the bus stop. A lot of people were doing the same. It wouldn't be my first choice but you may be able to get a bus in if you have to stay further out.

I'm someone who likes planning ahead (especially if it's a situation where things might get sold out), and I always get so annoyed when people are super laid-back about it and get on my case for wanting to get stuff planned. I don't even mind doing the planning if people could just tell me "yes" or "no" to what I am wanting to book.

I would reply letting her know things are already selling out and you don't want it to be a hassle getting to the starting line that morning. Maybe find a few hotels that are pretty close and still have vacancies, e-mail them all with the price, and say, "I think I'm going to book this one. Here's how much it is per night. Do you guys want to stay with me?" If they say no or you don't hear back soonish, I'd be tempted to go ahead and book it for myself.

That's annoying-of course there are hundreds of hotels in SF. If being within the city limits were the only criteria, you wouldn't have to worry about it!

I did this race in 2011 & we booked our room as soon as we found out that we had gotten in. We stayed at the Hyatt in Union Square & were able to walk to everything (expo, starting line, etc), which made everything else stress-free for the whole weekend. It was expensive but 4 of us split it, plus it was worth it to be right there. Good luck!

Nope, we're good. I booked it. We are only 3 blocks away. I was able to effectively communicate the urgency to the other two.
