Did you send your kiddos to preschool? At what age? If you did, did you have them in a program where they were the youngest kids in their class or the oldest?
DS (12/7/10) is in daycare/preschool. He's right in the middle of his class, age wise, b/c he's so young. His group is the "2's) so they all turned 2 at some point in the fall. He was one of the last, though.
DS had a late NOvember birthday, last school year he did a 3 year old preschool program (2 mornings a week), this fall he is doing the 4 year old program (5 full days) and next fall, kindergarten. He will be one of the older kids in class.

We're struggling with this decision right now - DD's birthday is October 4th (She's almost 3). I don't think she can start Kinder until the year she turns 6 so she'll be old for her grade - and that means we wouldn't send her to preschool until Fall of 2014 right before she turns 4. She'll be one of the oldest in her grade. I wish I would have figured this out better before I got pregnant because it's stressing me out. LOL
Ollie is September 1st. He's in daycare, so he'll probably just continue through unless I stop working. I have no idea what we'll do about kindergarten- his birthday is the exact cut off. He'll either be the very oldest or the very youngest. It depends on his maturity level when the time comes.
Kidlet started preschool at 3 but with November births she was right in the middle, neither youngest nor oldest. The classes were categorized by age groups in a small setting and they could move them at will based on skills, knowledge and maturity since most of them knew each other already anyway.

Ah, I see. For those that had kids that moved mid-year, did your kid mind moving into a different class/program? Or that's what other people did so the fluidity wasn't an issue?
gmail -what about the kiddos with spring and summer birthdays? Different class?
If they were spring, turning 2 after all the other kids, they were combined together from "Early 2's" and "Late 2's" to one big class this past January.
Summer, turning 2 right around now, different class.
Spring + summer, turning 2 before everyone else, most likely a different class. I think they try to follow the Sept 1 cut-off date as closely as possible.

DS moved, but kept teachers, so the transition was easy for him.

DD started preschool at 4. Her birthday is 10/21, so she turned 6 in kindergarten. DS #1 turns 4 on 9/5 and we'll be getting him into preschool shortly, but he'll start kindergarten just before he turns6.
DS' birthday is 10/2. He will be almost 6 when he starts K (the cutoff here is 5 years old by Sept 1). He is in preschool with the same kids he will start K with so he is one of the oldest.
And he started at 3 because it's part of his daycare program.

I didn't think about this being an issue until this spring when I was looking for a 2 year old program for DD and she can't be in any (except for the $$$$ Montessori ones) because she won't be 2 by September 30th (she misses the cutoff by 30 days- October 29th birthday). So she'll start the 2 year old programs when she is just about to turn 3 and so on. DD2 is due on DD1's birthday so basically we will have the same issue with her.
I'm Catholic though and I did find a Mom's Morning Out program at a local church (not mine) that they need to be 2 for, but lets them do just the spring semester if they turn 2 in the fall.
Have you contacted the programs, though? Some of them have cutoffs, but when I got in touch with them to do the tours, they were more flexible. Doing 2s for the fall then transitioning to the 3-5 mixed age group in spring or just choosing which program I wanted based on my knowledge of my DS's readiness.

DD's birthday is ON the cut off date for our school district and yes I sent her. Her birthday is only like a week or so after school starts anyways. She is pretty much the youngest kid. She needed more structure than she was getting in the pre-k program and I was tired of paying for full day daycare so win win for both of us.
Both boys' birthdays are in mid-October. The cutoff is in September here, so they will start preschool when they're almost 4. They'll will be one of the oldest in their class (unless there are a ton of redshirted kids, I guess.)
We're looking to start E in a preschool this fall. He'd be in the Toddler Class (18mo - 3 years.) He'd most likely stay in that class the full school year.
We'd do three 1/2 days to start, but have the option for more based upon space in the class.
E's a December baby.
- If he's not accepted into a school, we'll most likely do a mom's day out program somewhere.
December birthday. We started him this past year, when he was 3. He's 4 now and will do another year of pre-school before starting kindergarten. he's pretty much in the middle of the pack.
i've got a december now and will have an october one shortly. i wish i'd thought about how annoying all of this is for school. lol. anyway, L started "preschool" at 2.
there were enough kids at daycare with oct 2009-february 2010 birthdays that they did an "early preschool" class when they were all 2-turning-3, then this august they'll transition to "preschool" for 3-turning-4, then for 4-turning-5, they'll be in pre-K. the absolute drop dead cut off for kindergarten here is 5 by august 1, and you practically have to have dispensation from the pope to start kindergarten at 4 (which is why i get so squicky about parents who push it--it's a shitton of extra testing for the kid to get permission. this is likely also my bias as a result of WHICH parents i know who became obsessed.). what happens for SOME kids is that when they go for kindergarten testing at 5, if they're ahead of the kindergarten curve the jump them to 1st grade at 5-turning-6.
anyway, it's all a stressfull mindfuck.
my personal view is that it's nice to be with the slightly older kids because then, worst case, you drop back/repeat preschool year. the peer pressure is great.
the bean's birthday is 10/1. she started preschool when she turned 4 and last year did a year of transitional kindergarten. she's starting K this year and will be 6 about a month and a half into the school year. TK was wonderful - she thrived in the class and developed a lot of self-confidence she was lacking.
