I grew up with all kinds of animals. My parents are divorced. My dad lives on a farm with cows and pigs in the Midwest. My mom lives on a horse farm near DC now in her semi-retirement and I grew up working part-time in a stable in high school and riding lots of horses. I also remember visiting cattle at my grandparents' farms.
I consider myself to kind of co-own my mom's dogs and cats since I have spent lots of time with them, done their chores whenever there and I've often taken them to the vet for her. I've also had birds.
I want a dog in the worst way but we need to be a bit more settled in our lives for that. My SO loves border collies. I love Westies and I have been warming SO to the idea of getting one. Really though, we may change our minds about what kind of dog to get based on our future lifestyle. I also love cats but SO is less keen. He never had pets growing up and so he doesn't really understand the appeal of cats, though he does love dogs. I get my cat-loving fix by visiting my mom's and also volunteering at the SPCA sometimes to socialize the homeless kitties. That is fine with me. Westies and cats don't always mix anyway.
Basically ... about future pets, we'll get there when we get there.
I learned while living in Switzerland that it's actually illegal to not keep bunnies in pairs. I would probably get two anyways!
But it's awhile off. I keep looking at the adoption website for the local place though! We are still working on getting a cat.
So what happens if you have two and one dies? Do you have to get another one? Or do you get a death certificate for the first one that you can show if someone accuses you of bunny-abuse?
You buy another. And then it becomes a vicious cycle of making sure the bunny has a partner. Your neighbors might even take notice if you haven't. Nosey neighbors. In the mountains it was more common to keep the guinea pigs and bunnies outside in enclosures.
We always had cats and dogs, but we had an assortment of other animals throughout the years: hamsters, gerbils, birds (finches), rabbits, iguana, ferret, fish, etc. Most of whom met an untimely end. I thought birds didn't drink water, so the finches didn't last long. Our boxer got the iguana. My cat got the fish. The hamster escaped and was found squished behind a dresser. I suppose the weirdest pet was the skunk my mom had when she was younger. She even had professional photos of Stinky

I had cats, chicks, ducklings, canaries, hamsters, Guinea pigs and bunnies. I also had a horse I rode, he didn't live with us though. I loved them all equally but cats, bunnies and horses have a special place in my heart.

LMAO. Considering the bunnies I would visit during the summer at the Hotel H worked at in the mountains were for a special dinner... It would be a popular choice.
MIL ate her pet rabbit. Her grandfather went out and killed it. They told her after. :-|

I got to have a weird variety, all for short periods of time, since we couldn't keep anything due to moving. So we pet-sat for periods of a year or so. We had an antelope for a while, watched over somebody's bush babies for a few months. We also took care of somebody's monkeys until one of them bit me and my father ended that arrangement. I had a parrot that got eaten by an owl...and a turtle that somehow managed to run away. In retrospect, we shouldn't have pets since I am allergic to cats and all the rest are apparently eager to get me out of their lives!
