probably because if he makes good money off this he's "obviously" screwing his customers. Or maybe the more fundamental reason that profit is eeeeeeevil.
Because if it was a small profit, what would be the point of investing all the time, money and effort into traveling across the border, transporting cargo, maintaining his store, paying his staff, etc?
you can't be serious with this. The vast majority of businesses start out small, barely getting by. They hope to grow over time. Even some of the largest companies operate on razor thin margins. Why do they bother getting up in the morning unless they're making "obscene" profits? Maybe because they still provide something valuable.

So much this. SMS, are you familiar with start-ups at all?
Given the cost of gas, goods, duty, rent and salaries for employees and "shopping helpers," Hallatt said he is "barely" getting by. He offers 1,000 products and does not carry fresh or frozen foods. Markups are usually $2 or $3, and keeping items in stock is a perennial problem.
But I do think there could be legit reasons for TJs to be annoyed. have spent time and money branding their image, and we have laws that protect that intellectual property. We don't know what his store looks like, or what kind of ads he's running. I know jackshit about trademark rules, but I do know they are there to protect brand images. Depending on the facts, TJ's annoyance could be entirely fair and legit. Maybe they aren't, I don't know, but the point is, they aren't all in the article so it's hard to draw conclusions.
That said, I don't see how a US court has jurisdiction over the issue, considering the trademark infringement isn't even happening here, and US law wouldn't apply. So the fact that they sued him here tells me they probably filed the lawsuit knowing it was stupid but hoping they could extort the guy into closing up shop by making him incur steep legal fees. That is what makes them assholes.
